Wai-Sum Chan PhD FSA CERA

Wai-Sum Chan held teaching and research posts at the National University of Singapore, the University of Waterloo and the University of Hong Kong before his present appointment as professor in the Department of Finance in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries since 1995. Recently he was qualified as a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst.

Wai-Sum teaches undergraduate courses in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics and Risk Management and Insurance, and has received teaching awards/recognition from students, colleagues, and administrators. The major honour bestowed upon Wai-Sum, however, came in 1993 when he was awarded the Inaugural Teaching Excellence Award by the National University of Singapore.

Wai-Sum is an active actuarial researcher. He has published extensively in a variety of actuarial journals, including Annals of Actuarial Science, Australian Actuarial Journal, British Actuarial Journal, North American Actuarial Journal and Scandinavian Actuarial Journal. He was granted the prestigious Edward A. Lew Research Award (second prize) in 2006 by the Society of Actuaries.

Wai-Sum is active in the actuarial profession and is a member of the Council of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK). He is also the Chairman of the ASHK Education Committee and a member of the ASHK Interest Rate Committee.

During the past few years, Wai-Sum has achieved the following:

§ Represented the Profession by presenting (or as a panel member) at the Careers Fair each year (2001-2009);

§ Organised ASHK education lunch and evening talks;

§ Conducted Associate Professionalism Courses for the Society of Actuaries;

§ Served as a member of the Health Protection Account Study Group, Food & Health Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government for providing actuarial advices to the Government; and

§ Served on the Financial Security in Old Age Panel of the Central Policy Unit, a panel that provides advices to the Hong Kong SAR government’s retirement and old-age security policies.

Tony Cheng MBA FIAA

Tony Cheng joined RGA in 1997 and was named Chief Executive Officer for the Hong Kong office in 2004. The office oversees business in Hong Kong as well as in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. In May 2007, Tony’s role expanded to include overseeing RGA’s Taiwan Branch and, in July 2008, Tony’s role further expanded to include oversight of RGA’s businesses in China and India. Prior to his current position, Tony served in various senior actuarial and management roles in Australia, Malaysia, the United States, and Hong Kong.

Tony has more than 15 years of experience in the life insurance industry. He has a wide range of experience in actuarial pricing, risk analysis, financial management, and risk management of both traditional and non-traditional reinsurance products, as well as in providing strategic advice on products and distribution.

Tony has also been an active participant in the life insurance industry. In 2005 he was elected as a council member and, in 2008, he was elected as President of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong.

Tony received a Bachelor of Economics degree from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, and an M.B.A. degree from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He became a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia in 1997.

Robert Fok FSA FCIA CFA

Robert Fok is a fully qualified actuary with extensive international experience in wealth management, bancassurance, life insurance and financial institutions.

Robert joined Swiss Re in 2009 and is Director, Client Markets covering client related actuarial activities for Hong Kong and Taiwan markets and acting as an integral part of the senior client contact resource.

Before joining Swiss Re, Robert took senior positions at various multinational institutions, and successfully led, developed and implemented market entry strategies across Asia. In the most recent three years, he worked as Director of Actuarial Services Asia Pacific at PriceWaterhouse Coopers, setting up actuarial consulting business and providing life and non-life actuarial services to clients in North Asia.

Prior to that, he worked as Head of Business Development in Life Insurance and Retirement Services at Standard Chartered Bank, and Director and Chief Actuary at Standard Chartered Investment Services Ltd. He also worked as Director and Consulting Actuary at Watson Wyatt Employee Benefits Consulting in Hong Kong and Canada, Director of Operations at Principal International (Asia) Ltd, and Senior Manager of Life and Health, Greater China at ERC, GE Frankona Reassurance Ltd.

Robert graduated from the University of Waterloo majoring in Computer Science and

Statistics. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries USA and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, as well as a CFA Charterholder.

Jack Mak MA FIA

Jack Mak is a Consulting Actuary at Watson Wyatt in Hong Kong. He holds a mathematics degree from the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

He joined the actuarial profession more than 14 years ago in the UK, where he worked as a benefit consultant and a Scheme Actuary. During his time in the UK, he has been through several rounds of major legislation changes, and that has given him some very valuable experience which he would like to share with the Hong Kong actuarial industry.

He was also an assistant examiner for the Institute of Actuaries and had regularly participated in various seminars held by the Institutes and the National Association of Pension Fund (NAPF).

He returned to Hong Kong just about two years ago and is currently working with some of the biggest organisations in town. He would like to leverage on his UK experience to help further develop the employee benefit arena in Hong Kong.

Jack will be delighted to have the chance to contribute to the actuarial industry in Hong Kong by serving as a council member.

Louis Ng PhD FSA FCIA CFA

Louis Ng is Honorary Associate Professor and Teaching Consultant at Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science in The University of Hong Kong. Louis is a Fellow of both the Society of Actuaries and Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Louis had worked in both the insurance and pension industries for more than 20 years covering life insurance management, pension and investment consulting. Louis then moved to the educational field and about three years ago he took up his current role in The University of Hong Kong. This role involves a mixture of teaching actuarial science subjects to students and liaison with the various industries served by the actuarial profession.

Louis is active in the actuarial profession and is a member of the Education Committee and Climate Change Working Group of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK). Louis is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the Hong Kong Statistical Society.

During the two years Louis has been on the Education Committee, he has achieved the following:

§ Prepared an article on Actuarial Education in Hong Kong;

§ Invigilated examinations for the Chinese Association of Actuaries; and

§ Provided facilities for ASHK members to get CPD credits by attending seminars at HKU.

Jeremy Porter MA FIA

Jeremy Porter is Chief Risk Officer for HSBC Insurance (Asia Pacific) Holdings Limited, based in Hong Kong. Jeremy is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in the UK.

Jeremy has worked in the insurance industry for 19 years. Through this time he has been involved in a variety of projects and responsibilities throughout Asia, as well as in the UK and continental Europe. He has also been a regular speaker at actuarial conferences.

Jeremy joined HSBC Insurance as Chief Actuary in 2007, became CFO and Chief Actuary in March 2009, and has recently moved to the Regional Office to be responsible for the Risk function for the Asian Insurance businesses.

Before taking up this role, Jeremy worked in the actuarial consulting industry for 17 years, based in London, Paris and Hong Kong. His key areas of experience cover Risk Management, Mergers and Acquisitions, Market Consistent Valuations, Economic Capital and Financial Reporting.

Jeremy looks forward to serving the actuarial profession in Hong Kong if elected to the ASHK Council.

Victor Wong BMath FSA FCIA CFA CRM

Victor Wong is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Real Actuarial Consulting Limited based in Hong Kong with offices in Shanghai and Beijing. Victor is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and holder of Chartered Financial Analysts and is Certified in Risk Management.

Victor is active in the actuarial profession and was the Vice-Chairman of the Retirement Committee of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK) in 2002, and is currently a member of the Interest Rate Committee of the ASHK. Prior to joining Real Consulting, Mr. Wong has worked as Senior Actuary at Mercer in Toronto and Hong Kong for about 10 years. Through his leadership, Real Consulting has expanded into non-traditional actuarial fields, formed strategic partnerships with multinational firms including Real Options Valuation, Inc, Oracle as well as Nexus Risk Management to deliver advanced risk and financial modelling for businesses, as well as ALM and ERM for banks and insurance companies in the Greater China Region. Real Consulting has also successfully carried out business valuations and structured products advisory to over 15 pre-IPO and listed companies in the Greater China Region over the past 30 months.

He has served in the ASHK Interest Rate Committee for over 4 years and has assisted in building the HK Dollar Yield Curve software for the ASHK. Victor has been an active speaker for the actuarial profession. Recently he was the speaker at the City University of Hong Kong, ASHK evening seminar as well as the Chinese Association of Actuaries. Victor has a keen interest of promoting risk management values to the public, the actuarial profession as well as non-traditional actuarial fields in the region.

Victor is seeking to serve as an ASHK Council Member for the first time. He wishes to serve the ASHK and its members by exploring new opportunities, enhancing recognition and representation of actuarial profession in the public as well as non-traditional actuarial fields.
