PHYSICAL EDUCATION HANDBOOK

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The Physical Education Staff is looking forward to our relationship with you and your child during this school year.

We are very proud of our physical education program and the part it plays in the total educational experience offered by the Culver City Unified School District. We hope we can instill some of this same pride in your child. We realize that this cannot be accomplished without the cooperation of all concerned.

During our orientation in September, your child will become familiar with our policies and standards. We have furnished this copy of the Physical Education Department philosophy and policies so that parents may also be informed and involved.

We are also going to continue building our programs with ever newer equipment, facilities and technologies. The instillation of our conditioning / obstacle course, and our state of the art weight room are examples of these efforts. We are currently seeking funding (grants, budgets allocations, and donations) to bring our weight room to completion, which will allow a full class of PE students to all be continuously active.

Physical Education (PE) Missed Class Days

Excused Absences-

Class absences will be excused from PE if the student is properly excused by either the attendance office or other previously approved school functions. Any summative assessments that were missed will need to be made up during PAWS intervention or another instructor approved time . Any other critical lesson content will also be the responsibility of the student to keep current and knowledgeable on.

Truancies –

Truancies are not eligible for makeup assignments. The total daily grade for each truancy will result in a 0 for each day missed.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXCUSES

A. SHORT TERM EXCUSES - (1 -3 DAYS)

1. NO PARENTAL MEDICAL EXCUSE NOTES ARE TO BE GIVEN TO THE P.E. TEACHER.

2. Notes from parents are to be presented to the HEALTH OFFICE Personnel for

verification before school.

3. The presented note should indicate the nature and duration of the limiting condition.

B. MEDICAL EXCUSES – MDX (Over 3 DAYS)

REQUIRES written physician's note with diagnosis and duration of excuse.

Each note should be presented to the Health Office Personnel for verification before school.

1. 4 days - 3 weeks. - P.E. teacher will find alternative activities during P.E. class time.

Except for serious health conditions, students will still dress out and remain with the

class but will not be required to physically participate in activities. Class work will be

assigned and graded for qualifying students.

2. 3 weeks or longer - Counselor will readjust a student’s class schedule a student’s

class schedule to accommodate "P.E. Rest."

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 6

P.E. at the sixth grade level is designed to provide students with appropriate introductory P.E. skills including: the acquisition of basic skills for court games; running games; rhythmic activities; individual and team sports; and physical conditioning. Special emphasis is placed on basic ball handling skills along with movement exploration activities.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 7

The seventh grade curriculum is designed to provide students with an understanding of the nature and effects of physical activity on self and others; the acquisition and consolidation of basic skills of court, field and running games; rhythmic activities; individual, dual and team sports.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 8

The eighth grade curriculum is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to participate successfully on an intermediate and high school level in individual and team sports. The course includes a study of the effects of physical activity on the body and units include Basketball; Gymnastics; Weight Training and Physical Conditioning; Soccer; Flag Football; Volleyball; Softball; Track and Field; and Badminton.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS

To promote good health and hygiene practices it is important that all students dress appropriately on a daily basis. All students assigned to physical education will be expected to participate in all class activities as fully as physical capabilities and medical limitations allow. Loaner clothes will be issued to students who do not have their uniform. Each student who uses a loaner uniform will still be assessed a non-dress for that day due to unfulfilled responsibilities.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIFORMS

The required uniform for physical education classes can be purchased at the student store (room 116) and must be worn to P.E. every day (unless instructed otherwise by your P.E. teacher). In addition to the standard P.E. shirt and shorts the items listed below are required of each student.

Athletic type Shoes; no boots, flats, vans, or dress style shoes.

Athletic Socks (with absorbent footing)

Small hand towel for weight room (7th and 8th grade only)

Students who are unable to purchase dedicated P.E. uniforms from the student store may substitute a plain white T-Shirt and/or navy blue athletic shorts. Please be advised that NO POCKETS OR MARKINGS will be allowed or permitted on the clothing other than the names, similar to the standard uniforms.

Sweat clothes are acceptable on cold days but are not required. They must be clearly marked with student's name and must not to be worn to school. These items may be purchased at the student store. They are to be worn in addition and not instead of the regular P.E. uniform.

The P.E. uniform will be marked by the teachers with the student’s name during the first week of school by their P.E. teacher. A black permanent ink marker is used to write the last name followed by the first name (or first initial on shorts and sweats). No nicknames, aliases or any other writing will be permitted.

No markings other than student’s name shall appear on the Physical Education uniform. Any additional writing/markings will not be allowed. Students whose uniforms have these markings will be required to purchase a new uniform.

GYM LOCKERS

PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILD CAN WORK A STANDARD 3 NUMBER COMBINATION LOCK BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS.

GYM LOCKERS ARE NOT DAILY SCHOOL LOCKERS, STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ACCESS THEM AT ANY TIME OTHER THAN THEIR PE CLASS TIMES.

We are concerned that student's belongings should be safe at school, and we are asking the cooperation of students in following locker instructions so that losses may be avoided. All losses become the responsibility of the students.

Under no circumstances are students to share their locker combinations with any other student(s). When lockers are assigned, students should memorize and write down their lock combination and keep it in a safe place. Again, students are not to give their combinations to other students under any circumstances. They are to use extreme care in opening their lock so that others will not see their combination.

Students should not leave their locker open at any time. An open lock is an invitation to others to "borrow" personal property. When students leave their lockers for any reason they must be positive that their locks are locked, because this is when most losses occur. Other locker room rules are:

All gym articles in the locker must be properly marked with the student's name as instructed.

No glass (bottles, containers, etc.) will be permitted in the locker room and PE room.

If a lock is broken, or there have been losses, this should be reported immediately to the instructor on duty.

No food or drink (except water bottles) will be permitted in the locker room area or PE area.

No aerosols of any are permitted, even spray deodorant. Aerosols will be confiscated on site.

Students need to dress in front of their own locker, the bathroom is not to be used as a dressing room.

No articles other than gym clothes, towels, shoes, and deodorants are to be left in the lockers.

Lockers should be kept in a neat and orderly state.

Gym clothes are to be taken home on Fridays to be cleaned and returned the following Monday.

Expensive articles of clothing or equipment should be left at home.

All physical education uniforms will be checked daily for completeness, proper care, and cleanliness. Without exception, the uniform must be replaced if it is lost or mended if it becomes torn.

Please stress to your child the importance of personal responsibility for his own clothing and valuables.

1. Turn right 3 times and stop

4. Lift the Hinge and open.

PARTICIPATION POLICY

The Culver City Middle School Physical Education Department intends that students derive the maximum benefit from their Physical Education experiences. To help realize this goal and to encourage maximum involvement, each student is required to dress out on a daily basis and to actively participate in order to be credited with a passing grade. Adjustments may be made in the case of a prolonged illness.

Absences: In the event of absence, students are required to make up all work, per each day missed.

Wearing other students clothing is not permitted, both students will be considered non-suits.

Non-Suits: Students are required to dress out for class. Students who fail to dress out will be subject to the following guidelines per quarter:

1st Non-Suit - Detention will be given.

2nd Non-Suit - Detention will be given, with increased consequences.

3rd Non-Suit - Detention will be given, and receive an “N” in work habits, may be referred to main office;

4 OR MORE - Will to receive a “U” in work habits, will be referred to main office.

DISCIPLINE POLICY IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Physical Education Department follows the discipline policy outlined in the Student Handbook.

Detention will be assigned for offenses such as misbehavior, gum chewing, and habitual non-dress. All detentions will be served in the Physical Education, unless extenuating circumstances require it to be served elsewhere. Habitual offenders will be referred to the main office for further disciplinary action.

STUDENTS DAILY PROCEDURE

1. Report to the physical education area on time.

2. After returning from an absence, the student should bring the Permit to Enter Class (readmit) to their

instructor at roll call after dressing out. All notes to their instructor are to be given at roll call.

3. Students ARE NOT to enter the P.E. office unless it is an emergency. A student should consult the

instructor on duty in the locker room if questions arise.

4. Dress quickly, exit the locker room and sit on your assigned number in preparation for roll call. Each

class has an assigned numbered area. On rainy days they are to report to a designated indoor area.

5. Equipment should not be used until instructed to do so by your teacher.

6. Instructor takes attendance, makes announcements and explains the planned activities.

7. At the end of the class activity period the P.E. teacher will collect equipment, take scores and provide

closure before dismissing the class to their locker rooms to dress back into their regular clothes.

8. Walk into locker room and dress back to street clothes.

9. Remain behind the yellow line after leaving the locker-room until the bell to end the period rings.
