Character Analysis Paragraph – Revising and Editing Checklist

Circle the first word of each sentence.

Highlight your punctuation marks.

Underline sentences with two alternating colors. ( For example - blue, red, blue)

1. Capitalization – any capitalization errors will cause you to lose all 10 points for conventions!

· proper nouns and adjectives

· title

2. Punctuation

· quotation marks

· comma after introductory phrases and clauses

· comma before conjunction in compound sentences

· end punctuation

· apostrophe in possessive nouns

3. Syntax

· complete sentences – no fragments, run-ons or comma splices

· eliminate wordy or awkward sentences

(read paragraph aloud to yourself or have someone read your paragraph aloud to you)

Are your sentences clear? Do they make sense? Have you left out any words?

· variety of sentence types (simple, compound and complex)

· written in third person

· no contractions

4. Word Choice

· eliminate repetitive words

· eliminate the word “shows” – refer to shows thesaurus handout

· no sentences should start with This shows

· check their/there, it’s/its, were/where, our/are for usage errors

5. Spelling

· be sure you have spelled the author’s name correctly

· be sure you have spelled the character trait in your topic sentence correctly

· check spelling of any words about which you are uncertain
