Section 5: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
What do you think will make you a good SpecialConstable?
In the space provided below write down why you would make a good Special Constable.
You should write clearly and concisely, providing evidence of your qualities in line with the criteria listed in the person specification.
Please only write one side of A4 and do not use any additional sheets for this section as they will not be considered. You are restricted to 2500 characters in this section.
Competency Assessment (See Note 10)
At this stage of the application, it is vital that you can demonstrate the core competencies needed to be effective in the role of Special Constable. We are looking for evidence of the qualities you already have or may develop to enable you to carry out the role of a Special Constable. Your answers here will be used to decide whether your application will proceed to the next stage. It is important therefore that you think carefully about your answers. If you are unsuccessful you will not be able to reapply for six months.
There are two questions, which ask you to provide detailed examples of situations from your recent past experience. You must give specific examples of what YOU did or said on a given occasion. It is important that we can see in as much detail as possible, exactly how you behaved. You must tell us about a specific occasion.
Generalisations about what you usually do, what you did on a number of previous occasions, or what your group/team have done will not score well. We need to know what part you played on that occasion.
  • Write clearly and concisely – you are restricted to 1500 characters in each answer box. We also expect your examples to be succinct, to the point and fluently written, as any police report or statement would need to be written. Pay attention to your spelling and grammar as this will also be assessed. Write in complete sentences, not notes or bullet points – if it doesn’t make sense, we cannot score. Avoid waffle or being vague. Vague or evasive answers will not score well.
  • Each question has a number of prompts to help you shape your answer. Make sure you cover all of the prompts.
  • Try to use examples from situations you found challenging or difficult. Such examples tend to score better than situations that were easy to deal with.
  • You should read the question thoroughly and choose your examples carefully. Take time to think about the examples you will use before you start writing.
  • Wherever possible, use examples from a work setting. If you don't have, or can't think of examples from work, feel free to use examples from your social, voluntary, educational, leisure or family life. Examples from settings other than work can score just as well as work examples. The examples can be from everyday situations, they don't have to be from serious or critical situations.
Please answer truthfully as you may be asked to expand on these examples at interview. Do not use continuation pages, as these will not be scored.
Question 1 –Professionalism

Why was it necessary to intervene in the situation?
What did you do to take control of the situation?

What difficulties did you experience and how did you overcome them?
Question 2 –Working with others
Please describe a specific occasion when you have encouraged a person to view an issue more positively
Why was it necessary to encourage the person to view the issue more positively?
How did you encourage the person to view the issue more positively?
