This class will be an overview of the function and behavior of living and non-living things. We will start by discussing the nature of science, will discuss physics and engineering, chemistry, earth science and lastly life science. Here is how I teach, in general:

Semester 1

  1. First 6 weeks

  3. Types and properties of matter (1.5 weeks)
  4. Measuring motion (1 week)
  5. Momentum, Forces and Gravity (1.5 weeks)
  6. Angular forces (0.5 weeks)
  7. Second 6 weeks
  8. Measuring energy (1 week)
  9. Measuring heat (1.5 weeks)
  10. Heat of bonding and reactions (2 weeks)
  11. Measuring electricity (1.5 weeks)
  12. Third 6 weeks
  13. Applied electricity and magnetism (2 weeks)
  14. Measuring waves (2 weeks)
  15. Measuring light (2 weeks)

Semester 2

  1. Fourth 6 weeks
  2. Modeling earth, moon and sun systems (2 weeks)
  3. Humans in Space (1 week)
  4. Discovery of deep space (1.5 weeks)
  5. Rocks and minerals (1.5 weeks)
  6. Fifth 6 weeks
  7. Human impact (1 week)
  8. Geologic time (1.5 week)
  9. Earth’s interior and plate tectonics (1.5 weeks)
  10. Survey of life and classification (2 weeks)
  11. Sixth 6 weeks
  12. Evolution (2 weeks)
  13. DNAprotein in cells (2 weeks)
  14. Heredity (2 weeks)

Standards:

  1. Respect others, including the teacher (words, actions)
  2. Use clean, universally acceptable speech
  3. Ask permission to leave your seat or lab group (taped lines)
  4. Put in good effort during all assignments
  5. Clean up after yourself and your group

Daily Procedures:

  • You will write down the posted learning target(s) in your science notebook every day.
  • You will also write the homework down, which will be on the board on the first day of each week.

Grading:

  • Homework 10%Quizzes 25%
  • Assignments 15% Tests 25%
  • Notebook 10%Projects 15%

Interactive Notebook:

You will make entries in it nearly every day. It will include notes, activities and returned work. Information will go on the left. On the right will go a summary of what you learned or a creative activity to remember the information. Your warm-ups will start at the back of the notebook and work forward

Lab Groups:

You will be part of a lab group, determined by the playing card taped to your desk. You will have 30 seconds to push together your lab tables. When I need to interrupt your work, I will ring the apple bell

Entering and Leaving Class:

You will remove your spiral notebook and put your binder in the cabinet above your lab group #. Then, you’ll write the learning target(s) and warm up answers every day. The black suit member of your team will be responsible for putting up and returning binders each day. The red suit member will be responsible for returning all lab materials, handing in group work & putting desks on the squares

Homework:

I will put the homework for the week up on the homework board (behind my computer desk) at the start of each week. I will also email it to your parents. You can access the book at pearsonsuccessnet.com, user name: houck2015 password: huskies1 access: 6725E7C77D7778F06182

Submitting Class Work:

Work is to be brought to the front and placed by last name alphabetically in the blue alphabetizer. It is to be brought up by your red suit lab member

Projects: (*TAG students will have more in-depth expectations)

There are 6 projects—1 per progress report: 1) Engineering projects 2) Electrical model house

3) Journal summaries 4) Scientist interview 5) Viral disease poster 6) Personal lab experiment

Office Hours/Missing Work:

If you miss days, please see me to get make-up work. I have office hours to help you if you need help. They are during the first 10 minutes of lunch, my off period, or right after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Restroom Use:

You may use the closest restroom, one at a time. Please don’t ask to go in the first or last 10 min of class, or while we are taking notes. Please use a reasonable amount of time

Supplies: Please bring 1 pack of colored markers & colored pencils
