7Th Grade Mathparent Letterchapter 2

7th Grade MathParent LetterChapter 2

There are three big ideas we will be focusing our instruction around in chapter 2: First, understanding relationships between fractions and decimals; and second, how to add and subtract positive and negative rational numbers; and finally, how to multiply and divide positive and negative rational numbers. Our goal is to keep a balance of skill based learning along with enhancing our student’s ability to problem solve and think conceptually.

Section 2.1
Focus
Students will be working with rational numbers. They will convert fractions to decimals using long division. Students will also determine if decimals are repeating or terminating and how they would then be classified as rational or irrational numbers. (7.NS.2d)
Prior Understanding
In fifth grade, students learned how to divide whole numbers, whose product is a fraction. (5.NF.3)
Section 2.2
Focus
Students will solve problems involving adding and subtracting rational numbers. This will include modeling addition and subtraction of rational numbers on a number line, describing situations which make zero, and understanding how to use absolute value to determine distance between points on number lines and in the coordinate grid. (7.NS.1)
Prior Understanding
In sixth grade, students learned what integers were, how to plot them on a number line, and the rules for adding and subtracting integers, (6.NS.5, 6.NS.6, 6.NS.7, and 6.NS.9).
Section 2.3
Focus
Students will solve problems involving multiplying and dividing rational numbers, (including integer operations). They will work with hands-on manipulatives to represent multiplication and division of signed numbers and also with the rules for each. (7.NS.2)
Prior Understanding
In sixth grade, students learned what integers were, how to plot them on a number line, and the rules for adding and subtracting integers, (6.NS.5, 6.NS.6, 6.NS.7, and 6.NS.9). Multiplying and dividing is a new concept for seventh graders.
End of Chapter Expectations
1.  Section quizzes on the new material as it relates to conceptual understanding.
2.  Chapter assessment will cover the following skills: *
·  Convert fractions and decimals.
·  Determine when a number is terminating or repeating.
·  Adding rational numbers using a rule, a number line, and/or counters.
·  Creating zero pairs.
·  Operations involving absolute value.
·  Adding rational numbers.
·  Subtracting rational numbers.

*Please note the list above highlights the main skills to be assessed. Teachers may include additional content to meet the needs of their students.
