Dear Future 5th Graders and Parents,
Congratulations on completing 4th grade. We look forward to having you in class!
In order to prepare for 5th grade, you are required to carefully read 1 book from the following list:
o The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies
o Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
o City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau
o Frindle by Andrew Clements
o Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
o Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
o Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare
You are required to: identify characters, describe the setting, complete a story map, summarize the book, and describe/illustrate your favorite scene.
On the first day of school, you will need to turn in your completed Summer Reading Log. We will be using it in class.
Also, you will need to review your math facts throughout the summer and be prepared for an assessment during the first week of school. You should work towards memorizing all of the common multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction facts. Work hard and be determined for success!
In this packet is a Supply List for the first day of school. Please limit purchases to the items on the list. The desks are small and space is limited. If more supplies are needed as the year progresses, we will contact your families.

1 ream of white lined 3 hole punched paper for binder
at least five binder tab dividers
1 composition notebook for Reader’s Workshop
1 three- subject spiral notebook for ELA, SS, and Word Study
2 two-subject spiral notebooks for Science and Math
5 plain pocket folders (different colors is preferred)
1 highlighter
1 pack of pencils
1 erasable red pen
1 erasable black pen
1 pencil box (no larger than 8x3x1)
1 glue stick
1 package of post-its

1 simple/ affordable calculator
