Text: You will need to print off 3 articles from our website to use and model for the kids. “When Lightning Strikes”, “Smoking Hurts the Lungs”, “Tough Talkin: Discussing Bullies"
Read the articles and place under the document camera for students to see the structure of each. Discuss the author’s message and purpose for each article. Lightning – inform, Smoking – persuade/convince, Tough Talkin- teach or describe.
Use the author’s purpose handout to create an anchor chart and attach text samples of the articles. Students may keep a copy in their reader’s notebooks, and add text evidence from the articles that support each purpose.

Text:You will need to print the article “Rain Forest Rescue”from our website to use and model for the kids.
Students will be asked to use text evidence to make an inference AND locate text evidence to support a given inference.
Read “Rain Forest Rescue” to students, place under document camera to point out expository text features too, or if needed.
Create Drawing Conclusions Anchor chart w/students and model both aspects
  1. Text evidence – a section of the Amazon rain forest has been placed under government protection
  2. Inference/conclusion-Due to all of the rainfall and warm temperatures.
  3. Text evidence- the destruction has endgangered many species and could endanger the enitre region

Students complete Drawing Conclusions graphic organizer using “Saving the Animals” independently, or in pairs
  1. Inference- the money will got towards helping get the animals medicine, food, and supplies for the zoo
  2. Text evidence – cages and pens were repaired, and injured animals were treated.
  3. Text Evidence-Kabul residents depend on animals for work and food

There are 2 graphic organizers included in the handouts for you to choose from to create your anchor chart; you may choose whichever best suits the needs of your class.

Students use the WWWWWH graphic organizer to complete summaries for each chapter, and then a final summary at the end of the book. Use the graphic organizers you chose for your anchor chart.
