2013 Southern Regional Shoot Results

On April 25-28, 2013, 4-H’ers from around south Louisiana gathered in Lake Charles to participate in the 4-H Southern Regional Shoot. Junior and senior 4-H’ers competed in Shotgun (trap, skeet, 5-stand and modified trap), Modified Shotgun, BB gun, Air Rifle, Modified FITA Archery, National Archery, and Smallbore .22 Rifle. Some of these included team competition as well. All contests followed strict guidelines and safety rules.

Competitions took place at the Lake Charles Gun Club, the Southwest Louisiana Rifle and Pistol Club, and at Burton Coliseum. In all of the contests, 4-H’ers could qualify for the statecompetition which will be held May 23-26, 2013, in Lake Charles.

Trained volunteers were on hand to work as range masters, range officers, safety coaches, scorers, trappers, station leaders, test givers, and graders. Many thanks are given to these helpful and resourceful people. Without them 4-H programs such as this event would not be possible.

Awards were given at the end of each day. Several winners are members of the St. Martin Parish 4-H Shooting Sports Program. The participants are as follows:

If a participant wants to qualify for the National Match, they must shoot 3 different competitive events in that discipline. They have to prove they are an overall good shooter. Raw scores are used in determining placements in each individual competitive event (highest score wins). Overall awards are determined by percentage points in all 3 events, not by cumulative raw scores. We have participants that participated in Archery, .22 Smallbore Rifle, Air Rifle and Shotgun, hoping to make the cut to go to state which is at the end of May,to compete for a spot to represent Louisiana at the National Match which will be held on June23rd – 28th in Grand Island, Nebraska. Top four shooters go to Nationals unless a participant has gone in the past in the same discipline or a participant opts out then the next in line would go in their place.

The St. Martin Parish 4-H Shooting Sports program is based on volunteers. The volunteer coaches are as follows: Glenn Bienvenu, Robby Bishop, Byron & Donna Blanchard, Alina & Rodney Perro, Barry & Erica Poirier, Steve Bernard, EricMelancon, Mark & LauraScrantz, Lisa & Carlton Boudreaux, Cynthia Hayes,Michael Louviere, Larry Comeaux, James LaGrange, and Donnie Romero. St. Martin Parish parents also did a great job in helping out at the shoot by scoring targets. Shooting Sports would not survive without volunteers like these people. Anyone interested in becoming a coach, please contact the St. Martin 4-H office at (337)332-2181.

The St. Martin 4-H Shooting Sports program is funded by membership fees and count heavily on NRA Grants. Without these grants we would not be able to afford the equipment needed for the growing number of participants in our program. Please support the NRA program, it helps our Shooting Sports program survive.

We also would like to thank the Fusilier Complex Gun Range for allowing us to use the facility for our 4-H Shooting Sports .22 Small-bore Rifle and Shotgun disciplines.
