- Routine vet care: fosters make their own appointments with an OBG approved vet from the list below.
- Non-routine vet care:fosters need to notify theirfoster coordinator or a board member prior to any non-routine appointments (as outlined in the Volunteer/Foster Guidelines)
- Specialist vet care:Visits with specialists must be preapproved.
- Emergencies: Go to the nearest approved vet if possible and then notify yourfoster coordinator or a board member ASAP. You are authorized to spend up to $500 for emergency care to initially diagnose and stabilize the dog.
- Kennels & Boarding: Must be coordinated through your foster coordinator, since we often have vacation fosters available.

EMERGENCY VETS:
All fosters should find out where your closest emergency vet is, in advance. Should an emergency arise, please call one of the Foster Coordinators, either Marilyn Kessinger at 301-421-4436 or CeCe Holman at 703-481-2973 ASAP for advice and permission to take the dog to the emergency vet. If they can be reached, they may be able to use the OBG credit card to pay the expense; otherwise, you will be reimbursed. If you cannot reach either Marilyn or CeCe, please call another Board member or Officer to let them know what is going on and get further instructions.
While we want to make sure our dogs get appropriate vet care, there are instances where an emergency trip is not necessary (for instance if they got into and ate something they should not have and instructions can be given timely on how to make them throw up, before digesting the substance). Other instances require immediate care and would include:a bad seizure, a dog unable to walk or is in obvious pain or distress, a dog hit by car, etc. Without specific permission, you are only authorized to spend up to $500 to stabilize and make the dog comfortable. Amounts in excess of $500 must be approved by Teresa Butler (President),Cindy Readal (VP), Karen Bryson (VP), Marilyn Kessinger (MD Foster Coordinator), or CeCe Holman (VA Foster Coordinator), and in some instances may require approval of the Board.
