Unit 1 Quiz

Read the following paragraphs, written in response to articles in The Norton Mix, and try to figure out the student’s intended meaning. Then, using templates and transitions from They Say/I Say Chapters 1-7, revise and expand these sentences and paragraphs to make them stronger and more cohesive. Try not to reuse the same templates. You do not need to copy all the sentences on a separate sheet: just add the appropriate templates and make any other necessary changes.

1. In his article, Murray says that not everyone should go to college. Some educators agree with him: It is not necessary for all young people. Other educators disagree: It is everyone’s obligation to get higher education. Murray is right: I think that some people can get high-paying jobs as electricians. Murray is wrong: Not all people are good at working with their hands.

2. Bok’s argument is weak. He raises an important issue. He exaggerates the conflict between vocational and liberal arts faculties. He is correct when he states that these two faculties don’t always agree. He doesn’t offer many solutions. He says it will be very bad if they don’t work together.
