1
Dear Parents,
It is my pleasure to welcome students and parents to Ellis Junior High for the 2012-2013schoolyear.We look forward to working with you to provide the best education possible for our students. At Ellis, we encourage parents to become actively involved in their child's education--join our PTO, attend school and board meetings as well as junior high and high school athletic events, visit the Ellis blogspot, and INOW to monitor your child’s grades. The more parents are positively involved and actively seen by their children at school, the more they will come to value their education.
The student handbook is designed to provide students and parents with important information about Ellis Junior High School. It contains information about the student code of conduct, discipline policies, dress code, calendar of events, and other information about policies and procedures. Every parent should take the time to sit down and read the handbook with their child to know what is expected at Ellis Junior High. After you have done this, please sign and return the “Certification Page” at the back of the handbook to your child's homeroom teacher by August 27, 2012.
We look forward to a very positive and exciting school year. Together, we will make a difference in the life of your child.
Sincerely,
Scott Bailey, Principal

Mission Statement of Ellis Junior High School
As members of the Ellis faculty and staff, it is our goal to educate students so that they may reach their fullest potential as individuals who will be successful, responsible, and productive members of a unified society.
Philosophy
The faculty and administration of Zora Ellis Junior High School believe that the school is representative of the community in which it exists and that each student is a unique part of that community. The staff accepts the responsibility of assisting in the intellectual, physical, and social development of the student.
The staff recognizes that students come from different backgrounds and that student ability levels range from low achievers to gifted. Therefore, the curriculum is designed to give each student the best education possible. Students are encouraged to study, explore, and experiment beyond the regular class assignments.
The faculty and administration strive to provide a program with sufficient depth to encourage students in their personal learning experiences and to motivate students to become well-adjusted and well-informed citizens who will make positive contributions to society.
Zora Ellis Jr. High School History
The first classes for the education of the children of Talladega city were held in the Old Northside School until 1908. Later, classes were housed in the Old Graham School with high school classes grades 9 through 12 being conducted upstairs and elementary classes held downstairs.
Zora Ellis Jr. High School was originally built as the first Talladega High School in 1924. The first graduating class was in 1928 with a total of 34 graduates and Mr. E.A. McBride serving as principal.
A new wing of the school that included a new library, science lab, fourteen additional classes and two new bathrooms was built in 1959.
In 1974, a new building was completed to house Talladega High School and the old building became known as Talladega Middle School. Talladega Middle School housed grades 6, 7, and 8. Mr. Troy Griffin was the first principal of the school.
The old portion of Talladega Middle School was renovated in the summer of 1985. During that same year, the mayor of Talladega proclaimed a Zora Ellis Day in honor of a beloved retired Talladega High School English teacher. At that time, Talladega Middle School was renamed Zora Ellis Jr. High School and housed only grades 7and 8. Dixon Jr. High School, which was located across the street from Zora Ellis, became Dixon Middle School and housed grade 6.
Zora Ellis Jr. High School has continued to house grades 7 and 8 for the students of Talladega City Schools since 1985. During the summer of 2003, the old portion of Ellis was updated and received central heating and cooling systems.
Presently, there is a principal, assistant principal, counselor, media specialist, secretary, bookkeeper, and approximately thirty-six teachers and staff. The school enrollment is 340. The campus includes a gymnasium, lunchroom, band room, stadium, special education cottage, baseball field and Harwell Auditorium.
Zora Ellis Jr. High School has an active Parent-Teacher Association. Organizations for students include Ellis Ambassadors, Student Council, BETA club, and Junior United Nations. Extracurricular activities include football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls' soccer, baseball, softball, cheerleading, Ellis Emeralds dance line, and band. Ellis Jr. High shares the Talladega Tiger nickname and mascot with THS.
