JOB TITLE: Weekend First Aid Attendant (Weekends)

LOCATION: ZSL London Zoo, Regents Park

SECTION: First Aid

RESPONSIBLE TO: Health & Safety Manager

Main Duties:

·  The administration of first aid to ZSL employees, contractors, visitors and occasionally members of the public within and in the immediate vicinity of the London Zoo premises.

·  Undertaking the supervision of lost children and vulnerable adults and implementing procedures in accordance with Child Protection guidelines

·  Implementing and deploying health promotion initiatives throughout the Society.

·  Reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses, logging them onto the incident management system and escalating to the Principle First Aider where required.

·  Conduct initial investigations post incident regarding remedial actions and communicate to the Principle First Aider or relevant department.

·  Promoting the ZSL H&S Policy where appropriate

Responsibilities:

·  Administering first aid and responding to all first aid incidents across the site

·  To liaise with emergency services, duty managers and security department as required

·  To maintain high standards of hygiene within the First Aid Post

·  To ensure that the equipment held in the First Aid Post is clean and in good working order.

·  To maintain and control levels of stock of first aid materials in the First Aid Post and first aid boxes throughout the Zoo. Ordering additional supplies from the Health & Safety Department as necessary.

·  To assist in any accident or emergency situation and to keep informed of the Society’s relevant instructions and procedures.

·  When necessary, co-ordinate arrangements for a patient to be transported to home or hospital, ensuring relevant information is communicated to appropriate parties.

·  To enter data onto relevant occupational health / accident recording software.

·  Supervise lost children, reporting to the Health & Safety Manager and Visitor Experience Manager where applicable.

·  To attend regular First Aid refresher and any additional training as required

·  To assist with and deploy health promotion initiatives.

·  To maintain exemplar standards of customer service towards all staff and visitors.

·  Undertake any additional duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

1)  VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS

·  Good basic level of education

·  Must hold a valid First Aid at Work Certificate from a recognised awarding body

·  Hold a valid UK Driving License (desirable)

·  Will be required to have a DBS check

·  Will be required to have full series of vaccinations (including Hepatitis B, Tetanus and Rabies).

2)  EXPERIENCE

·  Past experience must include work in a First Aid role, ideally within a visitor attraction or public facing environment dealing with a variety of illness or injury’s.

·  The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate proven experience of working in similar role independently without direct supervision.

3)  INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

·  In dealing with Zoo personnel at all levels, the job holder needs to maintain confidentiality at all times, and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

·  When dealing with external agencies (e.g. emergency services,) and visitors, exemplary standards of customer service is required at all times.

·  Must be literate, articulate and be able to communicate effectively in English.

RESPONSIBILITY

1)  HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

No direct management of staff.

Liaising with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders to represent the First Aid function.

Communicating with and coordinating ZSL staff who hold First Aid at Work Certificates and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training report in an emergency situation.

2)  PHYSICAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

No involvement in managing a budget.

Access to confidential personnel information, but no access to confidential company information.

No involvement with the safety or well-being of animals.

3)  COMMUNICATION

Excellent communication skills are vital in this role. Customer facing communication is mostly with the public regarding medical information. There is some customer facing interaction with Zoo personnel regarding medical information and training.

The amount of written communication is varied, consisting of report forms and data entry.

The post holder must be able to work under pressure and triage accordingly

Dealing with the public, internal departments and external agencies.

MENTAL DEMANDS

1)  JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING

The job holder organises their own work plan and decides on methods to tackle task and priorities and use initiative.

Frequent routine decisions are made daily, based on personal knowledge and experience.

2)  ORIGINAL THOUGHT AND PROBLEM SOLVING

The job holder resolves the majority of daily issue that arise independently. However, assistance is sought from either the Health & Safety Manager or the Visitor Experience Manager, if required.

3)  CONCENTRATION

A good level of concentration and awareness is required at all times.

4)  FLEXIBILITY

At peak times, the job holder’s wide range of tasks are frequently interrupted by zoo personnel from all departments and members of the public.

The job holder will manage these interruptions and take immediate action, occasionally causing a temporary change of work plan and break periods.

The job holder, during quiet periods diversifies in undertaking additional Health & Safety administrative functions as and when required.

Indoor and outdoor (in all weathers) work.
