Position Statement
Reporting to the Director ofCommunication, Advocacy and Fundraising,the Senior Policy Officer is a key role within the Communication, Advocacy and Fundraising team. The role is responsible for coordinating YWCA Canberra’s policy and advocacy work, and managinga small team.
In addition, this role manages special projects when required, and supervises the relevant staff and/or contractors.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the implementation of YWCA Canberra’s Advocacy Strategy.
  • Deliver strategic policy advice to the Director of Communication, Advocacy and Fundraising and the Executive Director.
  • Develop policy and advocacy materials and undertake research relating to YWCA Canberra’s key issue areas
  • Manage and coordinate membership engagement activities and events, including as secretariat to the Membership Committee.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Selection Criteria
Qualifications / Tertiary qualifications in policy, advocacy, research, government relations, or campaigning.
At least 2 years’ experience working in policy, advocacy, research, government relations, campaigning, or similar roles.
Knowledge and Experience /
  • Experience in managing and motivating staff to achieve organisational objectives
  • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal skills, and a team oriented attitude
  • Demonstrated experience in researching and producing policy and advocacy materials such asgovernment submissions, reports, consultation documents, briefing papers and position papers, and website content
  • Research and evaluation skills, including strong analytical ability and problem solving skills
  • Strong project management skills including the ability to multitask, meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Experience in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns in both the on and offline environment would be highly regarded but not essential

Other Requirements /
  • Ability to work within the philosophy of the YWCA Canberra
  • Computer literacy
  • Current full driver’s license and access to vehicle with comprehensive insurance during working hours (if required)
  • A current Working with Vulnerable People Registration
  • Australian Citizenship or suitable rights to work in Australia
