Youth Leadership Coordinator

A ten-month AmeriCorps position

The mission of Social Capital Inc. (SCI) is to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. SCI aims to become a national leader in developing Social Capitalists who have the skills to connect and engage citizens. We envision a nation where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of their communities. This increase in ‘social capital’ will result in communities that are safer, healthier and more vital. SCI currently operates programs in 9 Massachusetts locations, with Woburn, Dorchester, and Lynn, being the primary locations for SCI AmeriCorps placements.

The Youth Programs Coordinator will be trained to implement the SCI Youth Leadership curriculum directly with SCI or at a community agency that has partnered with SCI to host a member. The SCI Youth Leadership curriculum emphasizes a learning by doing approach that trains teenagers to organize projects that engage their peers in Community Service Learning (CSL) and other civic activities. Responsibilities

·  Implement the SCI Youth Leadership Curriculum through a Youth Council program and/or another youth leadership development program. Some members may be initiating new youth leadership programs while others will enhance existing programs.

·  Provide direct support and ongoing guidance to approximately 25 teen leaders who in turn mobilize hundreds of their peers to participate in CSL and other civic activities.

·  Track progress of the teen leaders through the maintenance of individual civic leadership skills checklists and other assessment tools that document the practical skills they develop in areas such as.meeting facilitation and event coordination.

·  Provide additional direct service to youth at partner agencies that support youth development goals and have been approved by SCI.

·  Collaborate with other SCI staff, volunteers and partners on other projects to promote civic engagement, with an emphasis on integrating youth into activities of SCI and community partners..

·  Collaborate with other SCI Youth Programs Coordinators on joint efforts including occasional activities that bring together youth from various SCI locations.

Qualifications

·  Excellent organizational and communication skills

·  Ability to work with youth in a group setting; past experience with youth helpful.

·  A commitment to national service and the mission of SCI

·  Excellent written and oral English communication skills; bilingual communication skills a plus

·  The desire to work with diverse constituencies

·  Willingness to take initiative to achieve goals

·  Strong project management/multi-tasking abilities

·  Regular access to a car (required for Woburn, and helpful for Lynn positions)

·  Knowledge of community served a plus

·  Ability to work indepdently and on a team

·  College degree or coursework is preferred

·  A clear plan for living on the AmeriCorps stipend in the Greater Boston area
