Youth Cast Parent Information & Consent Form

Print all required forms as one-sided documents.

Formatting can change when a document is downloaded. Please check to ensure the document is formatted correctly so that all information for each individual document is included on one page. On most pages that must be turned in, the title of the page and a place for the student’s name are at the top and a place for the parent to initial or sign is at the bottom.

Thank you for your interest in the youth auditions for the Xavier Theatre production of Fiddler on the Roof.

We’re very happy that you are interested in having your son or daughter participate in our show. Auditions are open to 2016 theatre academy participants and siblings of high school cast members. Students must be in grades 4 through 8 to audition. I’ve included as much information as possible on the following pages. Please email questions to me before attending auditions.

Please review the information about available roles and time requirements for rehearsals. There are three categories of participation and the rehearsal requirements vary.

If you can commit to one or more areas of participation, please move on to the “Consent” portion of the form.

Please read and initial each section. Complete the contact information portion and the audition forms and bring all materials to the registration table on the day of the audition.

Participation options:

Youth Chorus:

The sons and daughters in the show. Some high school students also play sons and daughters. All youth performers sing ensemble parts. There are no youth soloists in the production.

Bielke & Shprinze:

Tevye’s two youngest daughters. They have some spoken lines and are involved in additional scenes. They are also members of the Youth Chorus. They must play 8 and 10 years old, respectively. These actors will be a part of the Youth Chorus but may not also play the Chava Ballet Dancers. They may, however, also audition for those roles.

Chava Ballet Dancers:

Three young girls who represent Tevye’s memory of his three older daughters as small children. This occurs late in the show in the “Chava Ballet.” These actors will be a part of the Youth Chorus but may not also play Bielke & Shpritze. They may, however, also audition for those roles.

Note - Speaking Roles:

Actors who wish to audition for the speaking roles of Bielke & Shprintze – the two youngest daughters, should bring a printed copy of the audition scene (found at the end of this document) to the audition.

Audition requirements:

All actors wishing to audition will sing a short segment of the song “Tradition”, the show’s opening number. Boys will sing the “Sons” portion and girls will sing “the Daughters” verse. No a capella (unaccompanied) singers will be heard. Actors should not sing any other song. The lyrics do not need to be memorized.

Here is a link to a video of that segment of the film:

The audition segment begins at 3:37 and ends at 4:13 (this includes both the boys’ and girls’ verses). A lyric sheet is included at the end of this document.

Please note that parents will not be allowed in the audition rooms.

Length of Audition Process:

You will sign up for an audition appointment time via the Sign Up Genius link on the theatre web page ( Since there is a simple dance audition after your appointment time, the amount of time you spend at auditions is difficult to accurately predict. As a general rule, you may expect the process to last about an hour, give or take a few minutes. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointed audition time. We will do our best to make the process go as quickly as possible.

Please read on. If you are interested in an audition, please bring the completed forms found on the following pages to the auditions on Wednesday, September 21. Auditions are by appointment on Signup Genius.

Thank you!

I know there is a huge amount of information here. Please read through it carefully so that we can guarantee the best possible experience for the students and everyone involved in the production.

Rehearsal Schedule:

A rehearsal calendar is included. Please read and follow the instructions for indicating your student’s availability on the calendar. I suggest you print a second copy of the calendar to keep at home, since your first copy will need to be turned in with your audition materials.

Actor availability will be very important in determining your student’s participation. Please be sure that all information regarding availability is very accurate. Changes in availability after a student is cast may result in dismissal from the cast.

Students with calendars marked “no conflicts at this time” or other, similar qualifying statements will not be considered. (“No conflicts” is fine but adding “at this time” indicates the possibility that the rehearsal commitment may not be honored.)

I have read and understand all of the information included in this form. ______

Casting Policy:

This first round of auditions is intended to help us become familiar with the actors who are interested in performing in the show. It may be possible that a callback audition is required. Callbacks are held to more fully audition students for a lead or supporting lead role. If we need to see your child for callbacks, you will be notified via e-mail. Additional audition materials may be used for callback auditions. Casting is not final until the audition results are posted. If your child is not invited to callbacks, he or she may still be cast in the show. We expect to post the audition results on the theatre website, by Saturday, September 24.

We anticipate that 10-15 children will be cast in the show. We are limited by space and costume availability. This is not a “no cut” casting call. Please make certain your child understands this before auditioning.

Actors must be in grades 4-8 to audition.

There is no overall height requirement. However, the students cast as Bielke and Shprintze, the two youngest daughters, must be believably shorter than their high school “Sisters.”

I have read and understand the casting policy. ______

Costume Policy

Student Name______

Costume Policy:

Most costumes are provided by the school. However, the following personal items must be provided by the performer:

  • Shoes in an approved style (Short work boots, Buster Browns, etc. in medium brown, dark brown or black)
  • Dark stockings
  • Undergarments

Additionally, the hairstyle worn at auditions should be maintained unless you are informed otherwise. Students should not have drastic changes to hairstyle (short cuts, coloring, perm, etc) without a consultation with the director. Since the play is set in the early 20th Century, modern styles may need to be modified.

I have read and understand the costume policy. ______

Publicity Release:

By signing below, you give Xavier Theatre permission to include your child’s name, likeness or photograph in publicity releases, promotional photographs, videos, and website postings.

I have read and understand the publicity release. ______

Additional Information:

All casting is based on the expectation that the child will be able to master the material and perform it proficiently and behave in a cooperative manner, and that parents fulfill the expectations outlined in this document. The child’s continued participation in the production is dependent upon these conditions.

Parents are expected to assist with supervision of the children during dress rehearsals and performances on a rotating basis.

I have read and understand the additional information noted above. ______

Attendance Policy

Youth cast members are expected to attend each rehearsal listed in this document. Failure to be present for any rehearsal or any part of a rehearsal for any reason, including illness, may result in a reduction of the child’s participation in a scene or song or in dismissal from the cast.

I have read and understand the attendance policy. ______

Lyrics & Audition Lines

Lyrics to the boy’s and girl’s verses of TRADITION:

BOYS:

AT THREE I STARTED HEBREW SCHOOL

AT TEN I LEARNED A TRADE

I HEAR THEY PICKED A BRIDE FOR ME

I HOPE SHE’S PRETTY

GIRLS:

AND WHO DOES MAMA TEACH TO MEND AND TEND AND FIX

PREPARING ME TO MARRY WHOEVER PAPA PICKS?

THE DAUGHTERS, THE DAUGHTERS. TRADITION!

Lines for actors auditioning for Bielke & Shpritze:

(females only)

Remember that you must ACT the part, not just read the lines.

Be creative…think about what is happening to this little girl and how she feels about it.

Your line delivery must give us a sense of that!

Be clear and distinct. Remember that changes in volume and rate can help convey her emotions more believably.

The lines have lots of space between so that you may make notes. The lines do not need to be

Memorized!

Papa says we have to leave our home because there are people who don’t like us.

Everyone seems very sad ….and I’m sad, too. But I’m also excited because we get to ride

a train and then a boat. I’ve never ridden on anything but papa’s milk cart.

(with wonder and excitement)

I wonder what life will be like in America!
