Prince Henry the Navigator / Prince Henry the Navigator was from Europe (Portugal) and he open a math and navigational school in Europe to help sailors travel the world.
He also led explorations of Africa.
World War I / WWI started in 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophia. They were shot and killed during a parade. Eventually due to alliances many European countries began to fight. Machine guns, airplanes, tanks, and mustard gas were used during the war. The USA got involved when the German sunk one of our ships, the Lusitania. Germany lost the war and was blamed for everything and had to repay all of the damages according to the Treaty of Versailles.
The Great Depression / The Great Depression or (WORLD WIDE Depression) started with the stock market crash on October 29, 1929 in the United States. People lost their jobs, their bank accounts were empty, and people went to soup kitchens to get food, while farmers lost all of their crops. Many countries were poor, especially Germany!
The Nazi’s / The Nazi Party came to power in Germany in 1933 under their leader Adolf Hitler. Hitler told the Germans he would fix their economy and help them get through the Depression, but he really blamed the Jews for getting them involved in WWI. They also started WWII by invading Poland- The USA got involved with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
The Holocaust / The Holocaust was the killing of 6 million Jewish men and women in Germany. Hitler blamed the Jews for starting WWI, so he put them in concentration camps and gas chambers. Some of the most famous concentration camps were Auschwitz and Dachau.
The Russian Revolution / During 1917, the Russians hated their leader, so they decided to kick him out of office. They threw stones and rocks at government buildings, and it was a riot! People were dying from starvation during the Russian Revolution because the farms were being destroyed because of WWI.
The Cold War / After WWII, TWO SUPERPOWERS came: USA and USSR (Russia). They began to threaten each other with Nuclear weapons (atomic bomb) and everyone became scared who was going to bomb whom. It was a war of words because no fighting ever took place! (Remember “The Butter Battle Book”)
End of the Cold War and German reunification / At the end of the Cold War, the United States and Russia (USSR) decided to get along, so we did! However, Germany was split in half between the United States and Russia, so we put Germany back together by tearing down the Berlin Wall and there was peace in Europe again!
The World’s 3 Monotheistic Religions (Believe in One God)
/ Judaism is the world’s oldest monotheistic religion. The religion was started by Abraham and Sarah, long before Jesus was born. The Jews lived in Israel.
Their Holy Book is called the Torah.
God gave the Jews the Ten Commandments.
Think of the Old Testament in the Bible, that is the story of the Jews!
Christianity / One of the second oldest monotheistic religions is Christianity. Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus also lived in Israel, and followed the Jewish faith. However, Christianity did not begin until after Jesus died. He was crucified because the Roman people did not like his teachings.
Holy book: Bible
Islam / Islam began in Saudi Arabia with a man named Muhammad. Muhammad preached about following one God (Allah) in Mecca, again many people in Mecca did not like his teachings so he had to travel to Medina. Muhammad believed in 5 things that Muslims should do: they are called the Five Pillars of Islam: 1. Pray 5 times a day facing Mecca, 2. Give to charity, 3. Say you believe in God, 4. Use one month (Ramadan) to not eat during the day, and 5. Make a trip to Mecca in your life (Hajj).

Ottoman Empire / The Ottoman Empire was a long existing empire which controlled much of the Mediterranean Sea. The Ottoman empire took sides with Germany during WWI, which according to the Treaty of Versailles; the Ottoman Empire had to be broken up. As a result, European countries began to make new countries which resulted in different ethnic groups not getting along with each other in the country.

People who supported the Holocaust were called: Anti-Semitic and people who supported the Jews moving to Israel were called Zionists.
Creation of Israel / The state of Israel was created in 1948 by the United Nations. After the Holocaust, the world looked upon the Jews in sympathy, and created a homeland for the Jews.
As a result the Palestinians were ALREADY living there, this created a huge conflict combining the two ethnic groups.
Land and Religious Conflict / Palestinians= Muslim (Islamic)
Israelis= Jews
Once Israel was created in 1948, placing the two ethnic groups of Palestinians and Israelis together created a conflict over LAND and RELIGION.
Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) / Iran vs. Iraq. Saddam Hussein was the leader of Iraq, in which he accused all of the people in Kuwait of stealing the oil fields in Iraq. He burned down all of the oil fields as a result, which started a war between Iran and Iraq. The United States joined the side of Iran, in which we gave weapons to help fight against Saddam Hussein. We gave some of our weapons to Al-Qaida, their leader: Osama Bin Laden!
Operation Iraqi Freedom / As a result of September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Center towers were attacked, the United States declared war on all TERRORISTS in Afghanistan and Iraq. We were looking for the leader of terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda, and their leader Osama Bin Laden. Eventually, we were successful in 2010 with the invasion of Bin Laden’s mansion, killing him. However, the war on terrorism has not ended, it is still continuing today!
