Chemistry w/lab

There’s more to our everyday surroundings than we see, and chemistry opens up that world for us. Don’t let its reputation of difficulty scare you –

You’ll be surprised by what you’re capable of learning and doing!

Tutoring hours : There will be a new sign up on my back wall every week where students can come sign up to take missed quizzes or receive tutoring.

Themes we’ll explore

Chemistry history / Problem-solving through experiments and calculations
Atomic structures and masses of different substances / Solids, liquids, and gases at the microscopic level
Different types of chemical reactions / «Life hacks» that you can learn from chemistry

Supplies Needed: Pens (at least one black, blue, and red), pencils (with functional erasers!), binder with lined paper, a bit of graphing paper, ruler (a mini 7-inch ruler is fine), whiteboard marker(s) for personal use, scientific calculator (graphing calculator is ok, too)

Class Policies and Procedures

I’ve created these policies because I sincerely want you to be successful people and have a positive classroom environment to be in. I’m committed to treating you with respect and dignity, and hope that you’ll talk to me individually if you feel that I’m not doing this. I also hope that you’ll agree to treat everyone in our classroom with respect and dignity. Our classroom environment will be as good as we all work to make it.

ALA policies / All ALA policies will apply to our classroom. These include:
-dress code adherence
-respectful behavior toward other students and teachers
-Every 5 unexcused tardies will result in a yellow card.
-Students must be out of the school building for lunchtime. If you’ve arranged to meet with a teacher, the teacher will need to write you a pass to come in.
Bathroom / Appropriate class moments to ask to go to the bathroom are during individual or group work time, not when new material or demonstrations are being presented. One student may go at a time. Please sign out and take our hall pass with you as you go.
Seating chart / Attendance will be done through our class seating chart, so make sure to be in your seat in order to be marked present. Seating charts will be subject to change throughout the year.
Late work / Late work will be accepted, but 10% will be taken off its grade for every day late (this is more so for your sake, so that you don’t push it so much that you fall behind in the class!).
Absences / If you’re absent, you do still need to complete any work you missed (if you feel your situation requires exemptions, come talk to me about it). If you have an excused absence, you’ll have two extra school days to make up the work. First, ask a classmate for class notes you missed and check the folder on the back table for any extra papers that you don’t have. Then, check with me if you have any other questions.
Re-dos / Throughout the week, I’ll keep a log of student work habits. If these are maintained at a level of at least 80% for the week, then a re-do will be allowed for the quiz or exam of that week. These re-dos will involve correcting and explaining questions that a student has missed (not re-doing the whole quiz or exam). Please sign up on the paper posted near Ms. Streibel’s desk to come do re-dos.
Exam-taking / Exams require much focus, so please respect yours and others’ efforts to focus by remaining silent during the whole exam time, even if you finish before others. Inability to maintain this silence will result in being asked to leave the classroom.
Tutoring and meeting with Ms. Streibel / There will be a paper posted on the wall near my desk on which I’ll indicate which times I’m available before or after to school to help you. Please put your name on the day and time you’ll want to come in so that I don’t leave the room to make photocopies or something else.
Cell phones and other distractions / There are definitely moments where cellphones are useful to have, but there are also moments when they keep you from interacting with people around you and from doing your best work. Unless told otherwise by the teacher (for specific activities), cell phones and other distractions are to stay in your bag.
Yellow cards / Though I hope that no situation ever escalates to give any student a yellow card, I will do what is needed to maintain a safe and respectful learning environment for the students in our classroom. Note that I will give you the option to come talk to me to resolve the issue before resorting to a yellow card.
Situations that will lead to a yellow card include harassment, inappropriate and disrespectful language, discrimination against others, violence, repeatedly interrupting others, repeated disregard for ALA policies, not respecting others’ property and classroom property, etc.
Cheating and Plagiarism / If you cheat or plagiarize/copy anyone’s work (inside or outside of this school), it will result in a zero on that assignment (no re-do).
Lab Safety / Any behavior or actions that don’t line up with our lab rules will result in sitting out of the rest of the lab activity, and receiving a zero on that lab report. The safety of my students is my priority!
