Year 8 CORE – Geography

Geographical Concepts - SPICESS

You have been split up into groups and given a concept to further research and present upon. The specific tasks are below. Your tasks must be presented in poster form.

Place: Adelaide has been named as the 5th most liveable city in the world in 2016.

-Broad question to answer: What makes Adelaide so liveable?

Other areas to include:

  • How accessible is the city?
  • What specific elements make our city awesome?
  • Think shopping, housing, beaches, transport, sustainability

Change: Research the suburb of Glenelg and how it has changed over time.Use drawings/pictures to help support your findings.

-What developments have have taken place?

-How has the foreshore changed?

-What role does the economy play in the area and what impact does it have on the environment and community?

-Is it better than it used to be? Or worse?

Interconnection:Your group is to research the interconnection between China and Australia. Base your research on the following questions:

-How are they currently interconnected?

-What goes there & what comes here?

-Look at migration (moving between the countries, holidays etc)

Scale: Your task is to pick an issue on a local scale (i.e. around the school) and conduct a survey of the class/year level. You must then present your findings along with your recommendations on how the school can become more sustainable based on this survey. Some suggestions are: litter around the school, school uniform etc.

Sustainability: With your group, design a sustainable school. You need to present a picture of this school along with explanations of why it is sustainable. Some questions to consider:

-How does it get energy?

-How do students get to and from school?

-How does it care for it’s grounds?

-What do people eat while they’re there?

Environment: Individually, calculate your ecological footprint at:

-then as a group, present your findings along with suggestions of how you can reduce your footprint.

Space:Research and present how the space in Mawson Lakes is used.

-Why are there so many lakes – Amelia

-House construction - bradley

-Dead ends on streets - maegan

-How the suburb began – Amelia

-Use of water by residence - maegan

You will be marked according to your final product, how well you worked as group and your individual contributions to the final product.
