The purpose of this WebQuest is to help you get a feel for World War II and to begin our study of Anne Frank and the Holocaust. Follow the steps below to complete your WebQuest. Use the Anne Frank website page (Language Arts/Literature) for the WebQuest links listed in Steps 1-5. This assignment should be completed at home; due Monday, 3/13. Have it with you at all times in class; it will be the “go to” assignment when other work is finished.

Step 1: Read about the after-effects of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. Take notes for each section:

A. What year did Adolf Hitler become the leader of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party?
B. Go to 1925. Click on Mein Kampf. What does Mein Kampf mean? (Third or fourth paragraph)
C. What is an Aryan, according to Hitler? (Around the fourth paragraph)
D. What year did the Nazis hold a book burning?
E. List some authors whose works were destroyed.
F. Scroll to the very end. Click on the Statistics of World War II. Which country had the most fatalities?
G. How many countries were involved with World War II?

Step 4: Use this site to learn about the concentration camps. Record relevant notes (consider depth/complexity and content imperatives) for each section. Use bullets for each notation.

  1. As we read Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl, you will learn the historical context of what young Anne endured while living in the Secret Annexe for over two years. We will learn about topics such as the causes of WWII and the Holocaust, which encompasses so many topics from concentration camps to D-Day.
