Writing Process- Hero’s Journey Tale
1. Brainstorm the story elements
Stage 1: Ordinary World… Original/normal life BLUE
Stage 2: Call to the Adventure…. This is when the hero learns of a task to complete RED
Stage 3: Refusal…. Either the hero or some other force resists/hesitates the call PURPLE
Stage 4: Tests and ordeals…..
a. When he/she meets the mentor
b. This is where the character meets allies and or enemies
c. Faces danger
d. Has to overcome some form of fear
ORANGE
Stage 5: Crossing the Threshold… Extraordinary world
Leave their life to face the journey BLACK
Stage 6: Symbolic death… ordeal or set backs
Hero faces his/her greatest danger…. Resurrected, overcome a fear, learns a lesson GREEN
Stage 7: Return or the road back…… has defeated the ultimate test and begins his travel back to the ordinary world YELLOW
Stage 8: Reward/Freedom…. There is something earned either by the hero or given to the people as a whole. GREY
Elixir…. Lesson that everyone can gain from the experience
Chart 1….. Setting- Ordinary World. Where does the hero begin?
Chart 2…..Conflict- In complete sentences explain what the main problem in the story is, What needs to be fixed?
Chart 3…...Hero/Heroin - gender, name, outcast or member of the society
Chart 4…..Villain- gender, name, one sentence description
YOUR STORY MUST BE ORIGINAL… NOT a complete remake!!!!
1. Create a chart diagram with all the details above
2. Drafting- Draft your story. Make the story coherent/make sense.
a. Story Must have ALL eight steps above
b. Story must be 400+ words
c. WE will be in the lab tomorrow to type .. if your rough draft is not complete you WILL NOT PARTICIPATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
d. Must be in paragraphs
e. Will end up being about 1 ½ pages typed.
f. All Sections (hero’s journey stages) will be noted in word…

3. Sharing & Revising-
4. Revising & Editing- Turn on MS Word on projector- each student will type their part of the story, in chronological order.
5. Print the final copy for each student. Students assess the story with the rubric.
6. Grading:
a. Summative: Use a rubric- class grade.
