Arrhythmia Alliance launches ‘Know Your Pulse’ campaign on World Heart Rhythm Week, to raise awareness of the importance of pulse checking to keep heart conditions under control

On 7th June 2010 Arrhythmia Alliance announced the results of a survey conducted in Europe which showed, 70 percent of people are not aware if they are at risk of arrhythmias and 40 percent are not taking the basic measure of checking their pulse to know if they are at risk. To raise awareness of the importance of pulse checking and to educate people on the importance of taking their pulse, Arrhythmia Alliance will open the 2010 World Heart Rhythm Week (7-13 June) with the launch of a global awareness campaign ‘Know Your Pulse’.

Being aware of your pulse is important because it may help identify an abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia). A cardiac arrhythmia is an electrical problem with the heart which causes the heart to beat too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia) or erratically. It can cause a range of conditions including Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD), syncope (blackouts or loss of consciousness), and atrial fibrillation (a leading cause of stroke, and the most common of all cardiac arrhythmias).

The ‘Know Your Pulse’ campaign will provide people with the necessary tools to help them take their pulse which is available in the following formats

•A ‘Know Your Pulse’ online app to help people learn how to check their pulse [download here/link to page]

•A ‘Know Your Pulse’ i-phone app [download here/link to page]

•A ‘Know Your Pulse’ check card [download here/link to page]

Conditions caused by heart rhythm disorders kill more people in Europe than breast cancer, lung cancer, stroke or AIDS.

The campaign also seeks to raise awareness amongst healthcare professionals of the importance of conducting regular pulse checks during normal patient check-ups so that cardiac arrhythmias are given as much attention as other conditions.
