COMPETENCY:

309 The Child Welfare Professional can recognize the indicators of drug abuse, including cocaine addiction, in adults and in children; understands the potential effects of drug use on family functioning; and knows appropriate referral methods and treatment resources.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Participants will be able to:

1.  Associate the history of prescription drug use in America with the current trend of prescription drug abuse;

2.  Differentiate between the three most commonly abused types of prescription drugs; and

3.  Identify common behaviors associated with prescription drug abuse.

CALENDAR SUMMARY:

This 3-hour training focuses on the participant’s development of an understanding of prescription drug abuse and/or misuse. It will provide the child welfare professional with information about the history, facts and trends of prescription abuse, as well as prescription drug types and classifications.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Child welfare professionals and community partners

EXPECTATIONS OF THE TRAINER:

The trainer must have a detailed knowledge of prescription drugs and their effects. The trainer is also expected to have knowledge and experience related to child welfare practice, addiction and treatment. Trainer knowledge and experience is required in the areas of engagement skills, cross-systems collaboration and the interpretation of the PA Child Protective Services Law as it relates to prescription drug abuse.
