Credible Sources and References
It is important to evaluate the research you use and determine the credibility of the author, the publisher, and the content itself when writing any essay that depends on supporting evidence. Your argument is only as good as the support you use, so choose wisely! If I made the claim that eating the gel of the Aloe Vera plant everyday would increase your health, but had no support or research to back up my claim, you would likely turn away and not even consider trying the bitter plant.
However, if I were to bring you research from expert doctors, nutritionists, and case studies from top medical journals that backed up my claims, you might be more likely to try it. This is how a paper becomes successful.
The following worksheet is meant to help you practice identifying credible sources. It is very similar to an annotated bibliography, which you may use at some point in your academic careers and is a great tool to help in the research phase of the writing process. You will also gain practice in citing and referencing quotes and paraphrases using APA.
Explore the Fortis Online Library (LIRN). There, you will find several databases that contain peer reviewed journal articles. You may also choose to do internet searches, but be aware you will need to examine the websites closely. Government (.gov), organizational (.org), and education institutional (.edu) web sites will be the best sources of information and be the most credible. Never use a .com unless absolutely necessary. Sites such as Wikipedia, ehow, about.com, webmd, and so forth are NOT to be used. The content for sites like these is not developed by experts, and often contains vague or inaccurate information.
