Job Purpose:
To take supervisory responsibility for the provision of technical and administrative support services to the members of staff and students of the xxx section of the Department/School. Manage/develop staff in the group, ensuring their work complies, conforms and contributes to the stated aims of the section and department.
Principal Accountabilities (Responsibilities):
Mange the SAP purchasing system and university internal ordering systems to ensure orders, goods receipt, invoice verification and asset management modules are processed and accurate records are maintained.
Mange and report on expenditure from research grants MIF accounts and other departmental recurrent accounts by analysing reports from the Sap system to ensure expenditure is coded and budgets are not exceeded and expenditure is in line with financial regulations and within agreed timeframes. Provide advice and assistance to colleagues, staff and students within the department on a wide range of financial issues to ensure compliance with financial regulations.
Provide advice and assistance on the organisation and design of laboratory space and access to shared facilities; planning and coordinating repairs and servicing of equipment; storage and disposal of equipment; security systems and ensuring compliance, through regular monitoring and safety checks that all activity meets Health and Safety standards throughout the area.
Plan, supervise and allocate work and responsibilities of the sections technical staff. Manage and supervise the training and development of technical staff on key equipment and techniques. Monitoring and appraising their performance to ensure work is carried out to the required standard. Involved in the recruitment, records of sickness, holidays and working time for staff within section.
Provide advice and assistance to academic and research staff in the design and development of equipment, systems and processes to support teaching and research.
Contribute to the development of systems and processes within section, analysing areas for improvement, preparing reports and recommendations and devising new working practices, systems or equipment to ensure continuous improvement and effectiveness of section and department function. / % Time

Resources Managed / Facts and Figures:
Staff managed: 5 full-time technicians
Financial, safety and other administrative services provided for 31 academic and other related staff members. There are 350 undergraduate and 75 postgraduate students.
Monitoring and reporting on approximately £600k. Asset management of equipment inventory approx 2500 items.
Departmental Health and Safety Officer and Security Officer.
Internal and External Relationships:
Internally
Daily and weekly team meetings of technical staff to allocate and discuss departmental/section duties.
Academics, academic related and research staff on a daily basis in relation to provision of advice and support on finance systems, provision of goods and services and section requirements for teaching and research activities.
Undergraduate and postgraduate students to provide advice and support on technical aspects of service and application of techniques and equipment.
Finance Department to discuss problems with invoice payments, expenses and queries etc
Estates department to discuss repairs of fabric of building, disposal of equipment, security issues etc.
Externally
Daily contact with suppliers, company representatives and service engineers to obtain quotes, negotiate prices and discounts on goods, chase orders discuss invoices arrange equipment services etc.
Planning and Organising:
Plan and organise own work and that of the technicians within the team having an overview of activities to be carried out throughout the year.
Take into account costs, deadlines, current workload of staff, space allocation, availability of equipment and routine maintenance.
Be prepared to alter and amend timeframes and plans to meet changing needs of the service.
Support planning on resource requirements for the future development of the section, laboratories and work areas for months and even years ahead
Plan to ensure appropriate technical assistance and support is available to academics and students in pursuit of research and teaching activity.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience (Indicate which are essential and which are desirable):
Minimum Requirements for Technical & Experimental Family Level 7:
§  Technical, technology/engineering or scientific degree.
§  For supervisory roles - supervisory/management experience and a qualification in management of ONC or above.
§  Financial training to manage budgets where appropriate.
§  In possession of or working towards a professional qualification.
