Seminar dedicated to International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction

Organization

This event is organized by The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations as a HFA National Focal Point and also as an integrator of the national emergency management system in collaboration with Prefect Institution of Valcea County.

Objectives

-raising awareness within communities with the involvement of all the actors and stakeholders that are being part of the disaster risk reduction field;

-better cooperation and info-sharing amongst line ministries, NGO’s, academic community and other actors involved in emergency management system;

-facilitate consultative processes with all the participants in order to establish a National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Romania and to implement The Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters;

-training the personnel of GIES regarding the measures that should be taken in order to have a better management on different types of risks: earthquake, floods, flash-floods, landslides, epidemics;

-using knowledge and education to build a culture of safety and resilience at all levels and creating a crossing bridge from a reactive to a proactive way of thinking regarding disasters;

Participants

The participants will be from emergency situations training centers, Red Cross, academic community, hydro-met specialists, different line ministries, representatives of the emergency situations inspectorates from all 42 counties, local DRR actors from Valcea county.

Structure

The event will start on the 14th of October 2009 with a seminar in which will be presented and discussed different aspects of prevention and mitigation of different types of risks that are often met in Romania like landslides, flash-floods, earthquakes and epidemics.

On the same day, at local level, the county inspectorates for emergency situations from all 42 counties, will organize in public areas preventive information activities and presentations of the technique they have at their disposal for intervention in different emergency situations.

The second day of the seminar from Valcea County, will be dedicated to the “on-site working visit” in order for the participants to find out the way are currently being managed the landslides from Ocnele Mari and also the preventive measures that exists at Ciunget Water Plant.
