Aim This event will provide an opportunity to explore how to think about and manage the difficulties of working with very challenging and vulnerable children in a variety of settings. We will explore in particular how child psychotherapy and psychodynamic thinking can support and inform this work.

Who should attend Anyone working with children and young people. Social Work, Child Mental Health, Voluntary Organisations, Education

Format The day will be both theoretical and applied. Papers will be presented and there will also be interactive workshops where ideas will be applied to practice.

1. "Building Relationships Using Play therapy Skills" This is a workshop exploring ways in which workers from different professions can facilitate children’s trust and communication through play.Kahren Ehlen

2. " A space, a box and fifty minutes" a workshop exploring the work of the child psychotherapist and how thatmight inform some basic individual therapeutic play work with children. Annie Baikie

3. "Working the Winnicott Way, Thoughts, Theories and The Squiggle" A workshop exploring how the work of Winnicott can inform good practice when working with children, young people and their families. Ros Wass-O’Donnell

4. The Story Stem Assessment Technique. A workshop demonstrating the story stem battery, an attachment based rating scale, and how the internal working model of the child can be accessed through narratives. Alexandra Scott

Biographies of Presenters

Annie Baikie. Having trained at the Tavistock Clinic in London, Annie Baikienow works asa Child Psychotherapist in NHS Grampian, she has a special interest in Learning Disability and in Looked After, Accommodated, Adopted Children and those in Kinship Care. Annie organises the Msc in Therapeutic Skills Course in Aberdeen.

Kahren Ehlen is a playtherapist {B.A.P.T.}, person centredcounsellor, family consultant and trainer. She has worked at Camphill schools for over 40 years. Presently she is one of the playtherapists at Camphill, Aberdeen and teaches on the B.A in Currative Education accredited by AberdeenUniversity and supervises playtherapists on the Notre Dame playtherapy training.

Andrew Dawson is a Child & Adolescent psychotherapist working in the West Glasgow C.H.C.P. Andrew trained at the Scottish Institute Of Human Relations and is the Vice Chair of The Scottish Child Psychotherapy Trust. Andrew has a great interest in creative arts having previously worked for many years as a dramatherapist.

Agathe Gretton is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist working in the public, voluntary and private sectors. She has spoken and written widely. Agathe is also an adult psychotherapist. Agathe maintains great links with current French thinking and practice around infant observation and therapeutic work with both adults and children.

Bill Ness and Stephen Thompson are both Family Therapist/Systemic Psychotherapists working within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Tayside. They are both Systemic Psychotherapist trainers each within their own respective specialities. They both share an interest in how the past is often repeated for children, young people and their families within the present. They are interested in braiding both modern and post modern methods to create a collaborative therapeutic encounter in which children, young people and their families are able to explore “safe uncertainty” and create knew possibilities for change.

Alexandra Scott. Trained at the Tavistock Clinic and the Scottish Institute of Human Relations. Alexandra now works as a Child Psychotherapist for Barnardos Fostering Service. She has a special interest in looked after and accommodated children, sexual abuse and early years. She is currently researching the effects of Abuse and Trauma in Infancy

Ros Wass-O’Donnell is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist working for Barnardos in a fostering project. Prior to working as a Child Psychotherapist Ros has many years experience in social work working both as a mental health specialist and within CAMHS.
