Position Title / Deputy Director

Reports to / Executive Director
Equality Myanmar seeks a committed and experienced person to join our team asDeputy Director. This position is full time and starts as soon as possible.
Organization Background
Equality Myanmar (EQMM), formerly known as the Human Rights Education Institute of Burma (HREIB), is a leading nongovernmental organization that facilitates a broad range of human rights education activities and advocacy programs which target civil society organizations, grassroots communities and government. EQMM is dedicated to raising widespread awareness of human rights in order to empower the people of Myanmar to engage in social transformation and to initiate rights-based solutions to social problems.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
  • Work with the management team to plan, manage, implement and monitor project activities and budget;
  • Oversee implementation of the 3-year strategic plan and transition strategy, including monitoring indicators and identifying opportunities for growth;
  • Manage the collaborative development of new program initiatives in consultation with staff and beneficiaries based on best practices for interactive, learner-centered human rights education;
  • Oversee implementation of all programs, finance systems, and human resources and ensure programmatic and organizational targets are met or adjusted;
  • Monitor the current human rights situation in Myanmar and oversee content development in response to changes and potential risks;
  • Conduct needs assessments to identify gaps in human resources and program management and develop strategies to address such gaps;
  • Mentor, support and provide strategic leadership to team managers including program, administrative, and finance teams;
  • Supervise staff development and team-building processes including annual strategic planning sessions, regular monitoring trips to field sites, provision of needs-based job training and on-going job support, and strengthened communication between program and finance teams;
  • Facilitate regular Management Committee, departmental, individual member, and all staff meetings and ensure open and accountable chains of communication across the organization;
  • Develop a positive work environment for all staff supported by a professional level human resource management function.
  • Represent EQMM at meetings with partners, donors and the diplomatic community

Fundraising and Communication
  • Work closely with the Development Manager and Finance Manager to evaluate and provide feedback on narrative and financial program reports and ensure thorough and timely fulfillment of donor requirements;
  • Oversee monitoring and evaluation systems, including regular re-assessment of program and project indicators;
  • Identify new funding opportunities following assessment of needs and strategies in line with strategic priorities of the organization;
  • Provide timely and effective oversight of the financial position of the organization including identification and implementation of required changes to match funding levels;
  • Maintain effective and coordinated budget monitoring processes for grant funds;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of organizational and project budgets in collaboration with the Finance Manager;
  • Overall responsibility for communication with donors, partners, networks, and other stakeholders on program implementation.
  • Maintain and actively build new relationships with potential donors and partners

Required Qualifications and Skills
  • This position is open toMyanmar Nationals and Internationals
  • Minimum 7 years working with a human rights NGO or comparable relevant experience in international development;
  • Postgraduate degree in human rights, law, political science, social science, international development or other relevant fields or equivalent experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational leadership, program management, and team supervision;
  • Excellent written and verbal English language and general communication skillsMyanmar language skills an advantage;
  • Experience in financial management and budget development/oversight;
  • Knowledge of Myanmar contextexperience working in Myanmar an advantage;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer skills;
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural work environment;
  • Creative, independent, and highly self-motivated;
  • Flexible, able to work under pressure, innovative, and a team player;
  • Strongly committed to human rights, social justice, and peace.
