First Assignment (10%)
This is the assignment that you will complete here and submit to us in order to become registered in
this course. It is worth 10% of your final mark so it is a significant assignment which you should carefully complete. After your First Assignment and Registration Form have been reviewed, you will be enrolled
in the course and will receive an email from your teacher with information to help you get started.
Communicative Learning Component using Rosetta Stone (72%)
You will complete six units of Rosetta Stone; each unit is worth 12% for a total of 72% of your course. Your Rosetta Stone account will be set up AFTER you have been registered in this course. The log-in information will be emailed to you at that time. Creative Works Component (10%)
For the Creative Works project, students explore or respond to a work of art; this could be visual art (e.g. painting); literature (e.g. books, comics, plays); music (e.g. a singer or band, a famous composer); or film (e.g. a movie, a famous actor). The objective for this component is that students explore a topic of interest to them and present what they have learned in their preferred format. The Creative Works project will be completed after you have been registered in the course (the instructions for this project will be available
on the homepage of your course).
Connections to Learning BLOG Component (8%)
While learning a new language, it is important to develop some language learning strategies. Throughout your work in your Introductory International Languages11 course, you will be maintaining a blog in your online course. You will develop a word bank of useful expressions that you can access during and after the completion of your work on Rosetta Stone.The blog is like a digital notebook or journal that a person might keep when learning a new language. You could also make notesabout how the learning is going for you; you could make vocabulary notes of words that you want to remember or any other points that will help you. You could also record notes on your blog while doing research and gathering information for your Creative Works project. Further instructions for the blog component will be provided in your online course once you have been registered.

BLOG Evaluation:
You will be evaluated on your post frequency and quality (please see the chart below). One requirement for your blog is that you will process and practice what you are learning on Rosetta Stone. As you work through the lessons on Rosetta Stone, little by little, you will be able to write more in your language of study.To earn 86% - 100% (an ‘A’), there should be evidence in your blog of increased acquisition of the language.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION

This First Assignment is worth 10% of your final grade. This is a substantive assignment which should take approximately ten hours to complete.

Introduction to your FIRST ASSIGNMENT
Why are you studying a new language? Since everylanguage and its culture are intertwined, studying a language is ultimately about connecting with another culture. Furthermore, to effectively use a language, one must understand the cultural context in which the communication takes place. In this First Assignment, you will have the opportunity to learn about another culture and you will also share your reasons for wanting to learn this language.


YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT BEGINS HERE

PART AEssay (25 marks)

Your research and project may be completed in English or in your chosen language of study.
For this section of the First Assignment, please respond to the following in an essay format (minimum of 500 words).

  1. What language are you studying?
  2. Why have you chosen to study this language?
  3. What connections do you have to this language…
    do you speak it at home; do your parents/grandparents speak the language;
    have you visited a country where this language is spoken?
  4. What are your impressions of the language, the people and the culture, etc.?
  5. In your essay, include information about the origins of the language and information
    about a country where the language you are studying is spoken.
  6. Make sure that you have a final reflection at the end of your essay.

PART CCultural Project (60 marks)

Your research and project may be completed in English or in your chosen language of study.
Below are the instructions for the project that you must also complete and submit before your language course will be set up.

For this part of the First Assignment, you will explore an aspect of the culture in a country where the language you are studying is spoken.The objective of this Cultural Project is that students explore a topic of interest to them and present what they have learned in a presentation (use Prezi or Google Slide for a presentation and insert the link in the space provided below) or essay (insert your completed essay in the space provided below).There are some suggestions in the instructions below. This is a substantial project and must show evidence of significant research as well as detailed information on your chosen topic. Please see the rubric at the end of this document that is used for evaluating the project so that you can make sure that you have included all of the required elements and have provided sufficient information and details (the top row of the chart shows the highest range of scores, called Proficient). Please note the requirement to include images and a list of your references (bibliography) in your project as well.

Instructions: Choose ONE topic from the three CHOICES listed below. Your project MUST be about only ONE of these topics: CHOICE 1, OR CHOICE 2 OR CHOICE 3 (not all three topics).

CHOICE 1:Food, cooking and eating in a country where the language you are studying is spoken.

Suggestions:

1. Find and research recipes (minimum of five) and make a digital recipe book.
2. Prepare a meal and take pictures or videos (include written information about the food
you prepare as well).
3. Write restaurant reviews about a minimum of five restaurants (include details about the restaurant and specific dishes available there, etc.).
4. You may also explore another idea of your own relevant to this topic.

CHOICE 2: A famous person (past or present) from a country where the language you are studying is spoken.

Suggestions:

1. Write a biography about this famous person.
2. Write an essay about a famous person and his/her contributions to the culture/country.
3. Choose a famous person and make a video acting as this person.
4. You may also explore another idea of your own relevant to this topic.

CHOICE 3: Landmarks and sights to visit in a country where the language you are studying is spoken.
Suggestions:

1. Make a travel guide including a minimum of 10 landmarks to visit.
2. Plan a trip for yourself (include all details of your travel arrangements, places to visit and the reasons for visiting these places and sights).
3. Research one particular landmark and research the planning and building, style of architecture, etc. of this landmark.

4. You may also explore another idea of your own relevant to this topic.

Here are some things to think about while you are completing your project:

1. What did you learn about the culture?
2. How does this compare/contrast to your own culture?
3. What visual aids (pictures, graphics, music, audio files, etc.) will you include?
4.What did you enjoy or find frustrating?
5. How does the research and work you did affect your understanding of this culture?
6. Do you have any questions about the culture? What intrigued you the most?
