WMHS Activity Periods 2011-2012

Activity Periods are an opportunity for students to get involved within the school community. They are essentially mini-clubs that will meet once per quarter on an adjusted bell schedule.

After all students identify their top three choices, they will be assigned to one of those activity groups where they will remain all four sessions.

Acoustic Guitar

We will break into smaller groups to explore and share music that interests them.

Required Student Materials: bring an acoustic guitar

ACT/SAT Math Prep

Help students prepare for the math portions of the ACT and SAT tests. Open to all grades.

Apples to Apples

A fun game that requires no skill! Game is played in groups of 8-10 students. Each student draws 7 cards that contain the names of famous people, places or things. The goal is to match the player’s famous person, etc. card to the “adjective” card that was drawn.

BananaGrams

This is a crossword building game similar to scrabble. Each person races to build their own crossword using each letter they have.

Beginning Sign Language

We will begin with the basic alphabet and learn basic greeting and school signs.

Be The Change Discussion Group
Continue the powerful discussions of those topics that were focused on during Challenge Day. The group will discuss and brainstorm ways to help build community at WMHS and to help stop the teasing, violence and alienation that is so deeply a part of the school experience for millions of young people every day.
Required Student Materials: None
Pre-Requisites: It is strongly recommended that the student has already participated in Challenge Day, but is not required. Students need to be passionate, driven, and committed to BE the change at WMHS.

Book Club

Card Games/Board Games

In this activity we would play a variety of card games and board games (Monopoly, Risk, Yahtzee, Chinese Checkers, Parcheesi, Sequence, etc.).

Card Tricks

Chess

Christian Teens

This group is for teens who want to socialize with other Christian teens and share about their lifestyle and beliefs.

Connect Four Tournament

Required Student Materials: None

Cornhole

Students are paired up and play as a team against another pair of students in a game of cornhole.

Required Student Materials: Cornhole boards with 2 sets of beanbags for every (4) people. A set is made up of four bags.

Dodge Ball
This is a highly skilled game of 10 on 10. It involves all types of movement skills such as running, throwing, skipping, hopping, jumping, lateral movement, catching, side to side agility and over all body conditioning. There will be 3 games going on at one time with a time allotment for each game. You will play a round robin schedule. The game involves some hard throwing and sometimes there may be an injury involved due to the high velocity throwing. This activity is not for the people who want to just stand around, we are moving the whole time without any breaks. There is a degree of being pummeled by many balls at one time which could cause welts to show up on your body and cause you to become woozy and disoriented at times.

Pre-Requisites: If you are a person who is highly motivated to succeed and become the best you can be, than this is the activity for you.

Drum Circle

A drum circle is a structured jam using hand drums and hand percussion (congas, shakers, etc.). We'll explore native (latin, african, etc.) and original rythms, and we'll all get a chance to improve our soloing skills.

Required Student Materials: None, but if you have any percussion instruments, bring them (such as djembes, congas or bongos) bring them! Do not bring pieces of a drum set, or other instruments such as guitar or keyboard.

Euchre
We will set up a Euchre tournament and play it out to see which pair of Euchre players are the best.
Required Student Materials: None

Pre-Requisites: Student must know how to play Euchre or want to learn

Fleece Blanket Making

Students will work on making a fleece blanket for themselves and one to donate to a charity for pets or the rest home (optional).

Required Student Materials: They will need to purchase the fleece material

GLBT Support

In this group gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgendered students will have a place to feel support within the Watkins community. We will discuss how to deal with prejudiced attitudes and where to go to for further support.

Grief Support

If you’ve had a close relative or friend pass away, meet and talk with other students to share stories, memories, and methods of coping.

Horror Movies

We will be watching clips or entire horror movies and making movie critiques.

Pre-Requisites: parental permission will be required for participation

Just Us Girls

In this group we will talk about the issues and pressures teenage girls face today. We will discuss ways to deal with certain pressures, what has worked and what hasn't. We'll also look at ways to boost our self-esteem and have a positive self-image.

Makeup Trends and Application This class will provide the latest on makeup trends and application techniques. Samples of makeup will be provided for use along with step by step instructions and "how to's".

Minute to Win It

Students will complete a variety of fun tasks – skill challenges that must be completed in one minute. Students will move from one station to another with their group (groups have 4 students in them).

OGT Math Prep

Pictionary

Incorporating drawing and fun, students will form teams to compete in a Pictionary Challenge. You don't have to be a good artist, just want to have fun and laugh a lot. We will be using the common game board and following the rules of engagement to have a good time.
Required Student Materials: Teachers will provide the game boards and necessities.
Pre-Requisites: Desire to draw and have fun.

Quilts for Newborns

We will be making quilts for premature or high-risk babies at Licking Memorial Hospital. Students can use this as a community service activity.

Required Student Materials: None – teacher will provide

Pre-Requisites: no sewing skills necessary, but would be helpful

Rape Survivors

In this group survivors of rape will find support. We will discuss coping strategies and how to live life as a "survivor".

Relaxation/Affirmations

Learn how to control your nerves and emotions through deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and visualizing your best performance

Science Fiction Movies
We will be watching clips or entire sci-fi movies and making movie critiques about the movies.

Pre-requisites: must have a love for sci fi movies and not be disappointed if we do not finish the movie.

Scrapbooking

Everyone needs a high school scrapbook! You should be able to complete 1 or 2 pages for your book in each session. If you’re not creating a book, then consider bringing paper and embellishments to create your own frame or gift card. My goal is to help you complete 10 pages by the end of the school year.

Required Student Materials: Bring approximately 10 photos, your own paper, embellishments, tools, etc. I will try to have extra paper, scissors and adhesives available.

Self Defense for Females

In this activity club, you will be exposed to helpful and innovative ways to protect and defend yourself. This activity is aimed at the female population only. You will be moving around a lot and applying the techniques demonstrated to you. Be prepared to do this!

Required Student Materials: School appropriate clothing that permits you to move about and freely implement the instruction provided to you. (No skirts or short-shorts, open toed shoes, flip-flops) Ideal clothing would be jeans, sweat pants and tennis shoes.

Pre-Requisites: Female, Physically capable of participating

Tennis

Students will play a variety of tennis games in order to get exercise and meet new friends.

Uno

Students will be placed into teams and the students will compete in rounds of the card game Uno. The points will then be tallied at the last activity period for an overall winner and a prize!

Vacation in the Wild West
This activity is open to students who have visited, or would like to visit, some of the national parks and other places of interest in the western United States such as Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone Nat'l Park, the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park and others. Participants will learn about these fascinating places through sharing of personal experience, video presentations, photographs, Google Earth maps, websites, etc.
Required student materials: Any photographs or other informational items from personal experience, or simply an interest in these amazing places.

Walking

Required Student Materials: Appropriate walking clothes and shoes.

Weightlifting for Strength and Power

Learn and practice the positives of weightlifting (technique, programs) with focus on strength, power and Olympic lifting.

Required Student Materials: shorts, t-shirt, athletic shoes

Pre-Requisites: Willingness to work hard and accept constructive criticism

WMHS Weight Loss Support Club

If keeping your weight under control is tough for you and you are looking for a support group to help your motivation; then join the WMHS Weight Loss Support Club. We will be sharing healthy information, recipes, and eating healthy foods, and supporting each other in our weight loss efforts. Will you recognize yourself this spring??

Wii – Just Dance

Want to have some fun and Just Dance? We will be playing Just Dance on the Wii console.
