Windows 7 Operating System Lesson # 5:

Removing, Downloading & Installing Programs

Log onto Computer I as instructed in Lesson 1. In this exercise you will uninstall the program Pure Sudoku and install it again. Do not save changes when you shut the computer down.

Note: In the operations below, you may not find Pure Sudoku on the Start menu or on the Control Panel, Programs and Features list. If you do not find the program, it has probably been uninstalled. In that case, ignore the Uninstall steps and go directly to the Install directions on the next page.

  • Click on Start, click on All Programs.
  • Look for Pure Sudoku among the shortcuts on the Programs menu.
  • Click on an empty space on the Desktop to deselect the programs list.
  • If you found Pure Sudoku listed, uninstall it as directed below.

If there is a Pure Sudoku shortcut on the Desktop, delete it now.

  • Click on Start, click on Control Panel.

Install Pure Sudoku

Notes:

In the steps below you will be downloading and installing an executable program to the folder D:\Work CG. On your home computer, if you do not have a separate folder for downloads set one up. It is useful to save the downloaded installation files in case you need them later. Installing a file from the folder is essentially the same as installing it from a CD. When installing a CD, after you insert the CD it will usually auto-start. If it does not, open the CD and click on Setup, Install, or some such name.

When offered a choice of servers from which to download, keep in mind the possibility of accompanying spyware and choose the one that appears safest. If you don’t trust any, or if you have to accept other software to download it, don’t download.

In some downloads you may get an Information Bar that pops up at the top or bottom of the screen and pop up UAC notices. Confirm that you want to download the program, either by clicking on the bar confirming the operation or on Click here to download.

  • Log onto the search engine.
  • Search for Pure Sudoku.
  • Open the Pure Sudoku - CNET Download.com link.
  • DO NOT click on Download Now.
  • Find Direct Download Link below and click on that to avoid installing the CNET Installer software.
  • Do not click on Open (do not install the program directly).
  • Click on the down triangle () next to Save.
  • Click on Save as.
  • In the Save As window browse to C:\Work-CG.
  • Check that PureSudokuSetup.exe shows next to File name:.
  • Click on Save below.
  • If you get a message that the program already exists, click on Yes to replace it.
  • Close all windows.
  • Browse to C:\ Work-CG and open it.
  • DOIBLE click on PureSudokuSetup.exe.
  • Click on Yes for the User Account Control notice.
  • Click on Run, then Next.
  • Follow the directions on the screen.
  • Accept the license agreement.
  • Install to the (existing) folder (C:\Programs\Pure Sudoku).
  • Create a shortcut in the Pure Sudoku Start Menu Programs Folder.
  • Do not create a Desktop icon (use the default option).
  • Click on Install below.
  • Remove the checkmark next to Launch Pure Sudoku.
  • Click on Finish.
  • Close all windows
  • Click on Start.
  • Point to Programs.
  • Look for the shortcut to Pure Sudoku.
  • Activate the program to verify that it works.
  • Close the Sudoku window.
  • RIGHT click on the Start button.
  • Click on Open Windows Explorer.
  • Browse to

C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

  • Open the Pure Sudoku folder to find the shortcut to the program.

This is the path to where the shortcuts listed on the Start Menu, All Programs are stored. You can add or delete shortcuts in this folder, but not place executables here.

  • Close all windows.
  • Go to the beginning of these instructions and follow the directions under Uninstall Pure Sudoku and remove the program.
  • Shut down the computer.

What you learned: You can find installation files on the Web. Installation files are executable files that open a Wizard which guides you through the installation. Shortcuts to the executable programs of the installation are generally placed on the All Programs menu accessible through the Start button and sometimes on the Desktop.
