Harper, Rebeka and Skye – May

Nellie and Eliza – June

Alex and Maddison – July

Armstrong Family:

July saw the Armstrong Family farewelled for the sunny banks of the Murray River. Big thanks to Trent and Maire for their input to the club. Trent played a major part in the construction of our sand arena and Maire always sourced great prizes for our annual raffle. Maire’s homemade soup was always well received over the winter months.

Indiana and Prince have a new 4-legged friend called Roger to help fill the acreage.

Quote from Maire: “You know you live in the country when you have to drive to your neighbours”

To Trent, Maire, Indy and Hudson hope you are enjoying the Aussie countryside and we would love to hear any updates you care to share about the tree change.

A sad farewell to the beautiful May, Eliza’s horse, but a happy hello to her new handsome Dino.

Micro chipping Horse/Pony

Message from DC:

Please ensure all members are given the opportunity to read:

Just a few points please

1.Please let me know if you are unable to attend the rally as it makes planning a lot easier

2.For safety reasons there is to be no swapping or lending of horses at the rally without prior permission from me. It can be hard to judge whether a mount will be suitable for another rider and so best to ask first. Also to note that a rider is under no obligation to swap/lend a pony.

3.Along the same note…One horse ,one rider..Pony club is a long day for our precious ponies and our ponies should be treated with respect. They do need some rest. And doing 2 dressage lessons or 2 showjumping lessons is just too much. There can be some discussion about this but this needs to be done with Kate or me please.

4.This is a note to the older riders. Please be very respectful of whom you are riding around and what you are doing…especially when you are cantering/jumping. I have had numerous reports of riders cantering fast around the paddock while the younger riders are riding .It can be very scary for these younger riders and very dangerous if their pony gets a fright and takes off. Cantering around the paddock should preferably be only done after asking everyone in the paddock riding if they are comfortable with it and perhaps at the discretion of the parents. I will talk about this more at the rally

It is also similar respect when taking the horses to and from pony club-wait and be helpful to other members-it is much safer if you walk over in groups rather than leave someone on the own to go over. Please be thoughtful!!!!

5.I will do micro chipping on Sunday. There will be a charge of $55.This includes lifetime registration

Micro chipping is highly recommended as a form of permanent identification and compulsory for EA registration. Horses must be clean on their Left side of their neck. They can be ridden after micro chipping but best to leave it ½ hr

Gymkhana:

Discussion on organising Gymkhana & allocation of tasks has commenced.

WHPC Gymkhana will be held on 14th October 2012. The committee has started the process that is required to hold such an event.

The committee work extremely hard to ensure all requirements are met for such an event. Members/parents of WHPC will be asked to ensure certain activities or tasks are carried out. If you are rostered on for an activity please ensure that you are available.

These events cannot be run without involvement of all families undertaking tasks.

Incident reporting:

Reminder to all members of the requirement to record and report incidents/accidents etc as they occur. Please ensure that either DC or Assistant DC is notified.

Vet health check rules for horses attending paddock:

Please note the wording in our handbook will be updated to

Vet health check rules for horses attending paddock

1. Owners/riders of horses that are coming into the paddock as permanent residents including those at the paddock on trial pending purchase, must provide to the paddock committee member (WB) a written health check certificate which has been issued by a Vet. This certificate is to state that the Vet has examined the horse and to the best of the Vet’s knowledge the horse was free of infectious diseases at the time of the examination. The Vet must have examined the horse within 5 days prior to the horse arriving at the paddock.

2. Owners/riders of visiting horses (horses overnighting before competitions/rallies next day, those attending for farrier, dental or other like appointments, those attending for lessons etc) must be able to assure the existing paddock members that their horse is, to the best of their knowledge, free of infectious disease and that it has not had contact with horses with infectious disease within the 5 days prior to visiting the paddock.

Message from Vice president:

John Newton has advised that council has allocated a substantial amount of money for new toilets and upgrade to facilities.

This news is very exciting and it has taken a lot of time and effort by John and Dave V to ensure that we received this upgrade.

I first heard of the application to council some 4 years ago when we first joined the club. The time and effort that has been dedicated to following up on the application has been huge – council meetings are not the most interesting nights entertainment. I am sure every member past and present would like to say a super BIG Thank YOU to all involved.

Victorian Dressage Club:

If you are aged 15 years or older and would like to see, learn and understand Equestrian Australia Dressage an opportunity to pencil dressage at EA events has been offered.

If you are interested – Many events are held at Werribee Equestrian Centre- please speak with Kate Sagar for further information.

Lowden Shield :

After great commitment from many members it was very disappointing that Lowden Shield was cancelled.

Please see Andrea regarding refund of entry fees.

No news of a re –scheduled event

Horse code of practice:

Tina Newton has kindly offered to source copies for the club and paddock.

This code has recently been reviewed and all horse owners should be aware of legislation and regulation involved in horse ownership.

This information is also available from Vic Dept of Agriculture.

Testing for the C certificate:

Practical testing will be conducted at WHPC grounds on the first weekend of October.

Pip will send out further information closer to date.

Australia and Olympic Equestrian

Sport Format

Equestrian is the only Olympic sport where man and animal are established team-mates, and one of the few where men and women compete on equal terms. There are three disciplines in the equestrian events in the modern Olympics: Dressage, Jumping and Eventing (now contested over four days) with an individual and team event in each, making six events in total.

Dressage
Meaning training in French, dressage demonstrates the horse’s ability to respond to the rider’s commands as it performs a series of movements in a prearranged order. Riders must memorise the moves and can’t use their voice to guide their horses. The scoring is done by judges who evaluate how well the horse executes the moves.

Jumping
Consists of negotiating a series of obstacles within a set time. The fences are designed so that if the horse hits them as they jump them, part or all of the fence will knock down and the rider will be penalised with ‘faults’. Faults are also awarded if the rider does not complete the course within a set time. The winner is the rider with the fewest faults. If there is a tie, the result is decided by jumping a shortened course as fast as possible without knocking fences down.

Eventing
Takes place over four days. Days one and two are Dressage, day three is Cross Country and day four is jumping. The Dressage and Jumping phases are similar to the pure Dressage and Jumping competitions. In the Cross Country event, riders have to complete a course over natural terrain of between 5,700m and 6,840m. The course contains solid obstacles that test the nerve, boldness, scope and partnership of horse and rider; faults are awarded for refusals, run-outs and exceeding the specified optimum time. If the horse and/or rider fall they are eliminated from the competition. The winner is the team or combination that incurs the least number of penalties. The team and individual events are held at the same time, with a second jumping test to determine the final rankings for the top individual riders
