Led due diligence and negotiations with University of California at San Diego to establish a joint venture in gene medicine. As CFO of this venture, developed all finance processes and controls. After one year, profits were 20% ahead of plan due to cost savings and pricing strategies. Successfully sold this venture to existing management. Enterprise remains successful to this day in biotech field.
Led the finance team in joint human resources/finance project to completely redesign the 401 (k) plan. Through restructuring and vendor selection significantly reduced corporate costs while providing service enhancements. Employee participation rate is well above national average.
Prepared a valuation analysis for a diagnostic reference lab subsidiary for the Board of Directors. Successfully drove the sale of the lab at a price in the upper end of the valuation range. Personally managed the sale and transition of the lab to the new owners. Also led a team that sold a product line with $20 million annual sales and personally managed the transition.
Established and led an in-house leasing company to finance purchase of medical analyzers from Roche. By leveraging financial strength of Roche, created a competitive advantage while increasing value to the shareholders.
- Led a process improvement project to enhance all order-to-cash processes. For two years focused a full-time team on analyzing and improving all processes related to interactions with the customers from the time an order was placed to the point when cash was collected. Relied heavily on Six Sigma training and methodology. The result was a major reorganization with resulting measurable service improvements and cost reductions.
Planned and executed a highly successful corporate relations campaign with major lending banks. Generated sufficient interest to obtain $100 million no-fee unsupported line of credit with multiple banks. Successfully negotiated a $ 45 million unsecured term loan at extremely favorable rates.
Established a highly-effective customer support center. Hired, developed and managed a professional staff which grew from 6 to 30 in support of one of the most successful consumer medical diagnostic products, the AccuChek blood glucose monitor. Achieved customer service levels which set the standards for the industry.
Extensive international experience. Assumed responsibility for analyzing U.S. financial results while working in Mannheim, Germany. Designed system for world-wide financial reporting. Negotiated bank financing in Guatemala and Mexico as part of regional treasury responsibilities. Set up and managed regional treasury office in Bermuda.
