The Willamette National Forest will soon be fillingone permanent, GS-0408-11,full-time Zone Ecologist position. The duty station will belocated at the Willamette National Forest Headquarters in Springfield, Oregon. This position is part of the Northwest Oregon Ecology Program which includes Mount Hood, Siuslaw and Willamette National Forests, and Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and also works incooporation with Northwest Oregon BLM District and Central Cascades Adaptive Management Partnership.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Ecology program main duties are to develop, apply and provide key ecological information and tools to help support Forests and BLM units, partner with research and other groups, provide technology transfer and foster the development of ecological skills. Past and current ecological topics of focus include plant association classification and mapping, riparian systems, fire ecology, forest succession, special habitats, landscape modeling, wildlife habitat ecology. The position requires an ability to initiate, design and implement ecological projects, work at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, and proficiency in spatial modeling and database applications. In addition, good communication and organizational skills in conducting workshops, presenting ecological information in a variety of contexts, and mentoring abilities are necessary.

DUTY STATION:

The Willamette National Forest Headquarters is located in the Springfield Interagency Office, 3106 Pierce Parkway, Springfield, Oregon, 97477. The Forest headquarters is co-located with the Northwest Oregon Bureau of Land Management, and the Oregon Military Department.

Springfield has a population of a little over 59,000 people. PeaceHealth is the largest employer, and recently opened a new hospital in the area, Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend. The Springfield School District is one of the largest in the state, with 4 high schools, 5 middle schools, and 15 elementary schools.

Nearby Eugene is the second-largest city in Oregon, with a population of a little over 156,000 people. The combined Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan area is the third largest in the state. Eugene, often referred to as “Track Town USA”, is home to the University of Oregon, and hosts the Olympic pre-trials for track and field events. Eugene’s largest employers are PeaceHealth medical group, the University of Oregon, and the Eugene School District.
