Why study the Bachelor's degree programmeBiological Chemistry?

The Bachelor's degreeprogrammeBiological Chemistryprovides education in a world language - English, which constitutes an essential communication tool, both in multinationalcompanies as well as international research teams. It is theinterdisciplinarystudy oftrade unions4.2.1Biology and 4.1.14Chemistry. This programme is designed to give the students the scientific backgroundand insight that enables them to enter the labour market. Itprovides qualifiedtheoretical knowledgefrom both of the mentioned areas. The biologicalbasis lies incell biology, microbiology, virology, genetics, molecular biology, animal and human physiology, immunology andbiotechnology. Topics in chemistry includegeneralandinorganic chemistry, organicchemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistryandbiochemistry. Sufficient timeis dedicated to the teaching of mathematics, physics and information technology. In addition totheoretical knowledgea greatemphasis is placed onpractical skills. More thansix hoursper week, which represent one-fourthof the teaching time, are devoted topractical training. Therefore this programme also provides the practical training in private research institutions. One of the advantages of the study programme is a relatively small target group, approximately 20 students, allowing for improved teaching focused on individuals.

Graduates of the study programme Biological Chemistry receive the following skills:

-good theoretical knowledge in Biology, Biochemistry and Chemistry

-good practical skills in the main areas of Biology, Biochemistry and Chemistry ( 3 weeks practical training in private research institution)

-the solving of scientific problems in multidisciplinary level approach

-the ability to follow safety instruction and protocols and to work safely in a laboratory

-the ability to analyze data (biology, chemistry, biochemistry)

-the introductory level of knowledge in ethics

-the ability to collect and interpret relevant scientific information (in written and oral communication)

-use the computer/ICT as a work instrument

-the knowledge of scientific English at a high level

-formation of research and scientific reports

Career for graduates of the study programme Biological Chemistry

The Bachelor study programme Biological Chemistry is able to competently perform work of a technical nature with some degree of autonomy. Graduates have a good theoretical and practical knowledge of fundamental biological and chemical disciplines, including the basics of physics, mathematics, bioinformatics and biostatistics. Graduates are able to use selected methods of biological and chemical disciplines enabling them to work with devices and biological materials in basic and applied research and manufacturing practices. Graduates can apply conventional biological and chemical methods in their laboratory research. A Bachelor has the knowledge and skills in research methods at different levels of organization of living systems. Graduates can apply for aposition at a wide range of departments within the Slovak Academy of Sciences, universities, health sector, agriculture and forestry, food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, and environment. The international character of the programme in combination with English as the main language of instruction qualifies the graduate for employment in a multinational environment. Graduates may also continue in their master studies at Comenius University or abroad.
