Each participant needs:

Jar

1 Ziploc per pair

2 oz mineral oil

2 oz water

2 oz cooking oil

Dancing Raisins and Jell-O

Each participant needs:

Clear glass

1 soda

Raisins

Jell-O (maybe salt)

Activity Set 2

Electricity and Magnetism

Each participant needs:

1 Ziploc with materials

1 piece of paper

Dab of iron filings on paper

1 stick pin

Part 1:

Gum wrapper trick

Part 2:

Part 3:

Make a magnet

At home: make a compass with a needle and a glass of water

Part 4:

Break a chemical bond in the basement

Silly Putty

Each participant needs:

Paper towel

2 glasses

Wooden stirrer

Borax solution

Glue solution

Stir borax solution into glue solution

Pat dry and play with it

Store in egg

Graphing candies

Each participant needs:

Bag of candies

Paper

Activity Set 2

Frog leap

Each participant needs:

Cotton “frog”

2 eyes

Wooden flipper

Paper clip

Calculator (1 per group)

Measuring tapes

The game:

Set up your flipper for the longest jump

When everybody has his or her flippers set up—

3 trials per frog

Average your trials

Make a bar graph on your board

Report to front board

Top frog in each group gets 3 more trials

Winning frog gets the prize.

Straw structures

Each participant needs

Ping-Pong ball

Per pair:

Tape

Box of small paper clips

Bag of straws

Clay or pins if structure mounted on carpet

Activity Set 4 (Move to Friday or take home)

Triangles using toothpicks

Number of possible triangles from 1-10 toothpicks

Each participant needs:
