Role and Responsibilities of aSubject Leader

The aim of this document is to clarify the role of the above level of teacher within the context of Westfield School in order to ensure consistency of purpose and action. It does not replace the current national ‘Schoolteachers Pay and Conditions’ agreement as a legal document or supplant national and local agreements between employers and teaching unions.

Subject Leader Responsibilities

A. Strategic direction and development of the subject

  • Use data and evidence from a range of sources to assess subject and individual performance
  • Quality assure validity and accuracy of progress data entered onto school tracking systems
  • Set clear subject targets for improving attainment
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to meet these targets
  • Monitor progress towards these targets and evaluate the effectiveness of these plans in terms of raised attainment
  • Keep up to date with and assess new developments in teaching and learning and subject development.
  • Develop policies and practices that reflect whole school policies and strategies for raising achievement.

B. Teaching and Learning

  • Involving the team as appropriate, plan and implement schemes of work which ensure effective curriculum coverage, continuity and progression for all students in their subject.
  • Ensure marking and feedback are consistent across subject(s) and in line with school policy and/or protocol
  • Ensure that learning objectives in subject are clear to both staff and students
  • Guide subject staff in the planning and choice of appropriate teaching and learning styles, as an integral part of schemes of work.
  • Ensure, as appropriate, the effective development of enterprise, literacy, numeracy and ICT skills within their subject.
  • Establish clear policies and practices for assessment and ensure that this is used to recognise achievement, evaluate progress and enable staff to help students set targets for further improvement.

C. Leading and Managing Staff

  • Establish clear expectations and constructive working relationships within the subject team, developing a climate of accountability and mutual support.
  • Delegate responsibilities and tasks in order to make use of and develop the skills of individuals and maximise the effectiveness of the team.
  • Develop the personal effectiveness of all individuals within the team through performance management, mentoring and the assessment and development of their training and development needs.
  • Ensure that appropriate senior leaders and the are kept informed of needs and developments within the team
  • Maintain their own motivation and enthusiasm and, where possible, that of other staff in the subject team.
  • Help staff to achieve constructive working relationships with students.

D Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources

  • Establish staff and resource needs for the subject and advise the Faculty Leader and/or Headteacher on priorities for expenditure.
  • Work with the appropriate senior leaders to ensure the effective deployment of subject staff.
  • Manage and monitor capitation and other resources to ensure value for money within subject.
  • Maintain existing resources and explore opportunities to enhance learning using new resources either from within or outside the school
  • Ensure that teaching areas available to the subject are maintained in a tidy and safe condition, and provide a stimulating environment to support learning, including effective use of display areas, and ensure that students’ work is securely stored.
  • Any other reasonable duties as directed by the Headteacher.
