R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Johnny Moore achieved outstanding success as a basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs and, since completing his career on the court, has made many significant contributions to the city of San Antonio; and

WHEREAS, During his collegiate basketball career with The University of Texas at Austin, Mr.Moore started every game for each of his four seasons, and while wearing the orange and white he set a Southwest Conference record for most assists in a single game, led the conference in assists in two of his seasons, became the alltime assist leader in Longhorn history, and was twice named to the AllSouthwest Conference First Team; and

WHEREAS, Blessed with exceptional quickness and court awareness, Mr.Moore set his sights on playing in the NBA, and his outstanding career with the San Antonio Spurs spanned the decade of the 1980s; and

WHEREAS, Mr.Moore was affectionately called "Junior" by his San Antonio teammates, and in the early 1980s he was one of the NBA's premier point guards, leading the league in assists during the 19811982 campaign and finishing in the top five among assist leaders in three other seasons; and

WHEREAS, In 1985 he was stricken with desert fever, a lifethreatening form of meningitis, but Mr.Moore overcame this serious illness and returned to play with the Spurs for 112 more games, completing his career as the franchise's alltime assist leader and second alltime leader in steals; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of his contributions to the organization, Johnny Moore's jersey number "00" was retired on March 20, 1998, joining those of fellow Spurs greats James Silas and George Gervin; he was also selected to the Spurs 25th Anniversary Team; and

WHEREAS, Mr.Moore became a Spurs community relations representative in 1993, and since that time he has made more than 300 appearances in the San Antonio area, delivering inspirational messages to schoolchildren, retirees, military personnel, and civic clubs; and

WHEREAS, Johnny Moore has set standards as a professional athlete and citizen to which all can aspire, and it is truly appropriate that this remarkable individual be honored at this time; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to Johnny Moore for his many significant accomplishments on and off the basketball floor and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr.Moore as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
