Dear Applicant,

Where Can a Career with the Virginia State Police Take You?

The Virginia State Police Academy is nationally recognized for its comprehensive, rigorous, and superior training. Its paramilitary structure enables trainees to be fully and professionally prepared – mentally, physically, and ethically - for any given situation.

Trooper-Trainees are exposed to a variety of training elements and environments. Classroom training is supplemented by considerable time in the field for driver training, firearms, defensive tactics, military drill, etc., to allow Trainees to put the concepts learned in the classroom into practice.

The Virginia State Police Training Academy is housed on the grounds of the Virginia State Police Administrative Headquarters in south Richmond. A full-service facility, the Trooper-Trainee studies, trains, eats, sleeps, drills, and exercises at the Academy. Trainees report each week to the Academy Sunday night and return home Thursday night for a long weekend.

Virginia State Police Troopers are held to the highest standards and therefore require intense, diversified training in multiple subjects. Many a trooper, even those with prior military experience, say the Virginia State Police basic training was the most difficult thing they have ever endured. In order to train the Commonwealth’s finest law enforcement officers, it has to be that way. From the moment a new Trainee shows up at the Academy, he or she begins a virtually non-stop journey. The result is a transformation from civilian to Virginia State Trooper.
