HIV awareness and stigma reduction staff training course

Aims: To increase awareness of HIV, reduce related stigma and empower staff with a greater working understanding of HIV and referral pathways for the care and support for people living with, affected by and at risk of HIV.

Learning outcomes, this course will help you:

  • Clarify the definitions & differences of HIV & AIDS and historical context
  • Understand HIV risk assessment: what is safe or risky behaviour & activity?
  • Explore impact of HIV on sexuality, sexual health and safer sexual practices
  • Emphasise importance of adherence to treatments when managing HIV
  • Engage with service users about HIV testing & refer to services available
  • Explore HIV & equality myths, stigma & prejudice and how to challenge discrimination
  • Deepen understanding of professional commitment to confidentiality
  • Appreciate the impact of living with and affected by HIV – HIV positive guest speaker
  • Referral pathways to Sahir House & wider support available

Who course is ideal for: health care professionals, clinical, public voluntary, statutory and private sector, drug and alcohol workers, social workers, counsellors, mental health, LGBT, BME and disability sectors, homeless and housing, HR departments, pregnancy and maternity care, equality specialists, sexual assault support, support workers, probation and prison services, nursing and care home sectors, youth and children’s services, teaching and education, employment and advice workers, welfare benefits.

We welcome staff from all areas of the workplace including operational and management departments. Ideal for CPD, certificate of attendance, free handout packs, red ribbons and resources available. Cancellation & DNA policy and charges applies.

Cost: Sponsored (free) for Wirral health and social care services, nursing and care homes. If your course place has been sponsored and do not attend the course (or send another colleague) you will be invoiced £40 to cover the costs of your absence. It will be assumed you sought permission from your line manager to attend this course when you return your booking form.

Refreshments & lunch: Refreshments will be provided. On full day courses lunch is for 45 minutes and is not provided but please feel free to bring your own lunch.

Course facilitators: Cath Turner, Development Manager, plus a HIV positive guest speaker.

Course: The course will use a mix of group work, participatory and trainer led learning. Information resources, certificates of attendance and red ribbons will be provided.

CPD: Certificate of attendance will be issued after the course. Please check with your professional body as this may be recognised as part of your ongoing CPD. (7 hours)
