Poetry Anthology

It’s time! After weeks of learning about both formal and free verse poetry, it’s time to see if you can successfully write your own!

You will be creating a poetry anthology consisting of 12 poems, one of which will be published on the school news site, The Roaring Panther.

What will the anthology look like?

It will be 14 pages long.

Page 1: Cover Page (Your name, title of Anthology, date)

Page 2: Table of contents (Poems should be in listed in order of appearance, with page numbers)

Page 3-14: Each poem should be on its own page. The title should be centered and the poem should be aligned to the left of the page.

Poems 1-4

These poems must utilize form and structure. Choose 5 of the 12 types of poems that we have studied (Creative Writing Poetry Examples) and write a poem utilizing the specific format requirements. This includes stanza, meter, rhyming and other criteria, found in your poetry notes).

When finalizing these poems, the type of the poem must be typed in the top, left corner of the page.

Poems 5-7

These poems must be created using the forms and styles used during our class activities. Your choices are:

1. List Poem

2. Slam Poem

3. Poem Inspired by art (must include a picture of the art)

4. Condensed poem (based on 5-6 sentences of prose-Must include the prose

5. Extended Rotten Poem (same format, 3 stanzas)

6. Single Word Poem, based on literature page (Mrs. Burns can give you a page from a text, or you can supply your own. Must be submitted with the poem)

7. Metaphor Poem

Poems: 8-9

These poems must each incorporate 3 of the following poetic form guidelines: At the top of the poem, the three chosen must be listed.

1. Lines: 12-15

2. Stanzas: 4

3. Meter: Each line should have 8 syllables

4. Rhyme: Follow one of the rhyme schemes presented in your notes

5. Repetition: word or idea/line

6. Figurative Language: use of one technique

7. Alliteration: evident use of in poem

8. Imagery: evident use of imagery in form of 3/5 senses

9. Onomatopoeia: evident use of

Poems 10-12

These poems can be a style of your choosing.

Grading Criteria:

*Each poem is worth 15 points.

*Absent of typing and spelling errors.

*Must meet requirements of poem criteria.

Presentation Aspects:

You will choose 3 of your 12 poems to read when we have our open stage presentation. For each of these poems, you must explain:

1. What the poem is about.

2. Why you wrote the poem.

3. Why you wrote it in the way you did (choice of form, devices, length, images).
