What Love is Like

1 Corinthians 13:4-6

Christian – Part 11

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-6 NIV

A. What Love is (v. 4a).

1. Love is patient – not short-tempered but long-tempered(2 Peter 3:9).

2. Love is kind – being useful by providing what is needed(Ephesians 2:6-7).

B. What love is not (vs. 4b, 5).

1. Love does not envy - negative feelings over another’s success or achievements.

2. Love does not boast - talk about themselves in order to impress others.

3. Love is not proud - an inflated opinion of themselves and their own importance.

4. Love is not rude- not ill-mannered nor does it behave indecently.

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt…” Colossians 4:6 NIV

5. Love is not self-seeking - it does not insist on its own way.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Philippians 2:3-4 NIV

6. Love is not easily angered- does not have a hair-trigger temper.

“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Ephesians 4:26 NIV

7. Love keeps no record of wrongs - it chooses to forgive and not hold it against the person.

“Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:13-14 NIV

“Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!”
Micah 7:19 NLT

8. Love does not delight in evil- love takes no pleasure in the misfortunes of others.

“Do not rejoice when your enemies fall into trouble. Don't be happy when they stumble.” Proverbs 24:17 NLT

C. What love rejoices in (v. 6)

“Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.”
1 Corinthians 13:6 NIV

Love rejoices with the truth - behavior in agreement with God’s Word.

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 4 NIV
