WHAT IS A TYPICAL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT?

Unit 1 PROJECT

Is it possible to determine the characteristics of a typical middle school student? Your project for this unit is to determine what those characteristics might be. There are checkpoints throughout the project as shown below. The final project is due September 1stand must be displayed either on poster board or in a book form. You must staple this packet to your final product.

STEPS / DESCRIPTION / DUE DATE
Posing Questions / The first step is to determine what to survey. Some examples may include: number of items, physical characteristics, hobbies, preferences, or opinions, etc. You must have 2 different questions. One should be categorical data and one should be numerical data.
Collecting Data / You must collect data from 15 people, for each question. These can be students in your class or grade. Collect your data using the Collecting Data Handout sheet.
Analyze Data / Once you collect the data, you need to organize and display your survey results into 2 frequency tables (one for each question). The results of each survey question should also be explained in at least a 4-5 sentence paragraph.
Making Graphs / Using the frequency tables you must make two graphs for each question. That is a total of 4 graphs. You cannot use the same graph more than one time. (Example: If you ask a numerical question, you could graph it in a stem and leaf and also with a line plot.) / September 1st

Collecting Data: First, you will need to write your 2 questions on this page. Make sure that one is numerical and one is categorical (with four to five choices).

Question 2:

Collecting Data Handout:

When collecting datayou will need to have the FIRST and LAST name of each student so that you make sure to survey 15 DIFFERENT students.

Analyze Data: From the Collecting Data Handout, you will need to create your 2 frequency tables, with proper titles and headings. You can do this on graph paper or regular paper. After you have completed your frequency tables, you will need to analyze your survey information. You will need to analyze each question. Each question should be summarized into at least 4-5 sentences. (This means that you need to write one paragraph for each question. That is a total of 2 paragraphs.)

Interpreting the Results: Now you will need to create 4 graphs (two per question). You need to make sure that you choose appropriate graphs for each question. You can only use a graph one time. Do not repeat any types of graphs. Make sure each graph has appropriate titles and labels.

Final Product: Your final project should be displayed on a regular sized poster board or stapled in the form of a book.
