DARDEN ~Uzzell Church Rd~ Cemetery

Visited by Members & Volunteers of

Isle of Wight County Historical Society

January 5, 2004

The cemetery is located in a field through the woods and behind the old Darden home. The house was then owned and occupied by Ralph Godwin, Sr. and upon his death is now owned by his son, Ralph Godwin, Jr. The cemetery is heavily overgrown with briars, weeds, small trees and other debris and has a metal fence surrounding it. Figure 7 shows a view of the cemetery.

Volunteers were careful not to disturb grave artifacts or damage the tombstones. A solution of shaving foam and water was used to clean and make legible the tombstone inscriptions. Afterwards, a water spray was used to remove any residue from the stones. The tombstone marking Koscuesko Hall’s grave has sunk in the ground until only the topmost part of the stone is visible as depicted in Figure 1. Some dirt was removed (then replaced) so as to read the below ground inscription … this was possible except for two lines which could not be deciphered.

NOTES:

(1)Two lines of inscriptions indicated by, “~~~~” could not be deciphered. The stone was embedded deeply into the soil, and even after removing about 12” of dirt, the writing was not legible.

(2)This photo shows the front side of the monument (Figure 5). The quoted inscriptions are contained on the back side (Figure 6).
