!INTERNATIONAL FOOD PROJECT!

DUE: By Friday April 11th,2014

Handed out March 18th

WHAT: Eat or cook food from a region of the world that we study in class (Africa & Asia)

WHEN:The project must be completed and turned in by Friday April 11th (posters and final projects can be turned in early). Food must be brought in on April 11th.

WHY?:To experience a new type of food and to get a look at a new culture

Option 1:Eat at a restaurant: Go online and search for cool new restaurants! Once you have chosen a Restaurant that serves food from a country that we study in class, have it approved by Ms. Weinstein. During your time eating take pictures to create a picture diary (out in front of the restaurant, of the food, you eating the food, the décor etc.), make sure you are in the pictures When you have finished eating, write up a food critique. Answer questions like- Where did you eat? What did you eat? How was the dining or cooking experience? What was good about it? What was bad? What was different about it than other restaurants you’ve eaten in? Would you eat what you ordered again? What was the best part? Will you try more food from that region? Your writing critique should include lots of detail and specifics. You also must include background information about the country from which the food came. If you eat at a Japanese restaurant include info about the country of Japan, some interesting facts about the country, and the origin of the food. Include more than just the information and questions above.

(Restaurants you choose on vacation do not need pre-approval; please make sure you are following the guidelines of African or Asian food)Ms. Weinstein will not be available over spring break for restaurant approval.

Option 2: Cook a meal: Find a recipe online, in a cookbook, or get one from a relative or a neighbor! Recipes should be pre-approved by Ms. Weinstein, no deserts. The cooked meal, your photo diary(pictures of you buying the food, cooking etc, make sure you are in the pictures), and food critique are your final project, and are to be turned in at the same time. You must include the recipe for all food brought in to share! Your food critique should answer the questions: What did you cook? What did you eat? How was the dining or cooking experience? What was good about it? What was bad? Where there any ingredients in the dish that were new or different to you? Would you eat what you cooked again? Why or why not? What was the best part? Will you try more food from that region? Your writing critique should include lots of detail and specifics. You must also do some research about the origin of the dish and the country it came from.Include some interesting facts about the country and the origin of the food;include more details than just the information and questions above. All food should be brought in on either Thursday April 10th OR Friday April 11th. Sign up with Ms. Weinstein for which day you would like to bring in your creation! All dishes and serving items need to be taken home on Friday!

You can present your final project in many ways. You can create a poster with pictures and your food critique. Create your own newspaper with your pictures and editorials or a power point! OR make a pamphlet or “menu” about your food experiences. Be creative!

Acceptable food choices:Asian (Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Indian, Iranian, Israeli, Turkish, Middle Eastern cuisine, etc.), African (Moroccan, Egyptian, Ethiopian, Kenyan etc.). If you eat out, you must try something NEW!! Something you have never tried before (grilled chicken and fried ricefrom the hibachi grill doesn’t count)
