Election 2017: Record number of female MPs

·  10 June 2017

·  From the section Election 2017

Layla Moran, newly elected Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon

There are now 208 women in the Commons, up from 191 in 2015, as a result of Thursday's general election. This takes female representation in the Commons to a new high.

Overall 32% of MPs are women but there are significant variations between parties. For Labour the figure is 45%, and 21% for the Conservatives....

For many decades after women were first legally allowed to stand for election, female MPs made up less than 5% of the total.

This reached double digits for the first time under Margaret Thatcher in 1987, but shot up as a consequence of Labour's 1997 landslide, when Tony Blair's party increased its number of female MPs by 173%.

Based on the lunar cycle, the holy month of Ramadan — an important period of religious reflection and fasting for practising Muslims — began on Friday May 26 and ends on Saturday June 24. But what does it mean for employers and what provision should be made for staff?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic year, a time when practising Muslims are unable to consume food or drink during daylight hours, which in Britain can extend to about 18 hours a day. It is also a time for prayer and gatherings at dusk when families come together to take a light meal known as iftar, which translates literally as “break fast”. Only children under 12, pregnant women and those on medication are exempted from fasting...

An 81-year-old who set up an all-woman rubbish collection team in her village in Lebanon now has a stream of visitors asking how she did it. For nine months in 2015 and 2016 rubbish piled up on the streets of the capital, Beirut, and even now a lack of landfill sites means some of the city's waste is being thrown in the sea.
