Administering Medication Policy

A merry heart doeth good like medicine.

Proverbs 3:12

Rationale

That the children will receive the correct or most appropriate medication as directed by their parents.

No medications shall be given to any child unless they have been consented to by the parent/guardian in writing (see attached Appendix – Permission to Administer)

Guidelines

For the purpose of this document medication means any prescription drug prescribed by a medical practitioner, medications for allergic reactions, herbal remedies and over the counter medications such as, paracetamol.

Dispensing

a)All staff are to be made aware of any medication which the child self medicates with on a regular basis and the appropriate staff are to be kept informed of any deterioration or increase in dosage or frequency.

b)No teacher or staff member shall be asked to give any medication to any child when they either do not understand the dosage and usage of the medication, or do not agree with its usage.

Storage Of

a)Any medication required will be kept in the Sick Bay or in the fridge as required.

  1. I / We, the parents / caregivers, accept that the school does not have a trained medical officer to administer medications.
  2. I / We accept responsibility for the decision to give this medication to my / our child, and acknowledge that the school is in no way responsible for the decision.
  3. I / We also accept that the school cannot guarantee that medication will be given at the precise time or by the same person. (If parents wish to guarantee the time, dosage and procedures, then they need to make their own arrangements for medicating).
  4. I / We will notify the school about any changes in dosage, time or procedures by filling out a new request form.
  5. Parents / caregivers are requested to deliver the medication personally to the school office.
  6. All medication that is not collected by the parents / caregivers at the end of the year will be disposed of by flushing down the toilet.
  7. I / We the parents / caregivers accept responsibility that medication to be used at the school is not past its “use-by’ date.
