Welcome to the world of Western Herbal Medicine….
The alliance of Om Shanti College and The Hierophant is proud to offer an Advanced Diploma course in Western Herbal Medicine. With over 40 years of combined experience of delivering training in complementary therapies we assure you comprehensive training in this fascinating healing modality.
Western Herbal Medicine is the study and use of medicinal and healing properties ofplants. Plants have the ability to synthesize a wide variety of chemical compounds that are used to perform important biological functions, and to defend against attack frompredatorssuch as insects, fungiandherbivorousmammals. Many of thesephytochemicalshave beneficial effects on long-term health when consumed by humans, and can be used to effectively treat humandiseases. At least 12,000 such compounds have been isolated so far; a number estimated to be less than 10% of the total. Chemical compounds in plants mediate their effects on the human body through processes identical to those already well understood for the chemical compounds in conventional drug. Herbal medicines do not differ greatly from conventional drugs in terms of how they work. This enables herbal medicines to be as effective as conventional medicines, and also gives them the same potential to cause harmful side effects.
A true medical system is always based on universal fundamental principles, these principles will also be relevant in all areas of Life, not only Health and Disease. Through this course you will be trained in the fundamental principles, which will have the added advantage that through your study you as a budding physician will experience an amazing healing journey.
Western Herbal Medicine is now used worldwide, with over 200 years of clinical experience. It is recognised by the World Health Organisation as a valid form of healthcare. Many celebrities in all avenues of life are users of Herbalism they range from Charles Darwin to Tina Turner.
Herbal remedies effectively treat a vast range of symptoms, from acute complaints (e.g. coughs, colds, fevers and injuries) to long term and chronic physical conditions (e.g. asthma, eczema, migraines and arthritis) and a broad range of mental and emotional symptoms (e.g. forgetfulness, panic attacks, mood swings and unresolved psychological trauma). Each medicine is chosen for the unique and specific needs of the individual client at that moment in time.
As a practising herbalist, you will develop your own style and approach to the healing art which draws upon your unique strengths and talents, and focuses on your areas of interest - children's health, emotional health right through to sports injuries. A typical day in practice might consist of new cases (typically a one to two hour in-depth assessment) and follow up consultations (typically half to one hour evaluating the client's progress and deciding the next step in treatment). Patient education will also be a large part of your daily activity. Cases may include disease prevention, especially for those travelling overseas and treatment pre and post surgery.
A Herbalist may also choose to be involved in post-graduate research, the proving of new remedies, writing journal and magazine articles and complementary health care team. Professional development for graduates may also include attendance at some of the regular seminars which feature leading Australian and international herbalists.
The Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine may be completed in three years full-time or longer part-time. Students have a maximum of five years in which to complete this Advanced Diploma.

This includes knowledge of:
- Basic knowledge of biomedical sciences ie anatomy and physiology, pathology, biochemistry, pharmacology
- Contra-indications for recommendations
- Cultural diets and restrictions
- Nutrition principles
- The nutritional components of food in common diets
- Treatment of the individual as the overriding principle of nutritional medicine philosophy - any treatment plan is expected to reflect this ideal in its design and implementation
Skills includes the ability to:
- Assess basic nutritional needs and determine the most appropriate modifications to the client's diet
- Assess the nutritional value of food components in common diets
- Demonstrate critical reasoning skills
- Demonstrate problem solving skills
- Determine the basic dietary requirements for basic health.
- Determine the potential impact of recommendations on the individual
- Discuss basic dietary changes with the client
- Ensure all treatment care delivered is appropriate to relevant legislature and regulatory requirements

- Perform a basic dietary intake analysis
Chemistry 1,2 & 3 - 60615
This unit introduces general, physical and organic chemistry and prepares the student for further studies in biochemistry, human biology, nutrition and human disease processes. It also introduces students to the major principles of scientific enquiry and scientific method and is a foundation unit of study for those students who do not have credit for Year 12 chemistry.
Learning Outcomes

Biochemistry 1- 60106c
Tissue Salts Course
The foundation of Biochemistry was laid more than a century ago by Rudolph Virchow, one of the foremost scientists of the day. He discovered that the human body is composed of an enormous number of tiny, living cells. Each cell is made up of an infinitesimal but perfectly balanced quantity of three classes of materials – water, organic substances and inorganic substances. Water and organic matter such as sugar, albuminous and fatty substances make up the greater portion of the body. The inorganic (mineral) elements, although present in much smaller quantities are the really vital elements. They are the active workers which utilize the inactive substances in building the millions of cells that the body is composed of. The life of these cells is of short duration – millions are constantly breaking down and new ones are just as rapidly being built up, providing there is a constant supply of the necessary material for this continuous rebuilding process.
Dr. Schüssler’s Therapy
Dr. Schüssler determined that these inorganic substances are present in the body as compounds (mineral salts) and named twelve principal compounds which he called “tissue salts”. He defined the types of disease (symptoms) arising from a deficiency of each tissue salt. With this knowledge he was able to prescribe with great accuracy and effect. Dr. Schüssler studied the function of each of the twelve tissue salts and was able to define the type of disorder caused by the disturbance of the physiological balance of each tissue salt.
