3M will Lead Open Development on next release of Standard Interchange Protocol

Company seeks input from libraries and other users

Portland, OR – March 24, 2010 – 3M announced today the company has committed to leading the development of a version 3.0 release of the Standard Interchange Protocol (SIP). This effort will provide the necessary protocol to meet library needs for interoperability between self-service library devices and software applications with ILS systems to support patron self service functionality.

3M Library Systems created the Standard Interchange Protocol (SIP) 1.0, in 1993. It enabled self-service checkout by allowing ILS applications and self-service devices to seamlessly communicate with each other. 3M published this protocol and made it freely available for use by libraries and other vendors, helping this protocol to quickly become the de-facto standard around the world. Today, it is still the primary protocol used to integrate ILS and self service devices.

Whether it’s our leadership position around ISO standards for RFID, or SIP, 3M is committed to driving efforts that will benefit the greater library community. In essence, this is an open development effort, and will be provided free for libraries to implement and will allow them to easily migrate systems and infrastructure at any point in time.

The Version 3.0 protocol is intended to address the needs that are currently being met with extensions, and other needs not currently supported by the SIP 2.0 protocol,” said Sue Boettcher, senior technical specialist, 3M Track and Trace Solutions. Libraries have noted that they would prefer that the SIP standard be updated to include these needs as some providers are starting to charge fees to include them.

3M is seeking participants from the global vendor community and libraries to provide input for version 3.0.

Version 3.0 will improve interoperability to enhance patron self service related devices. Like earlier SIP versions, SIP 3.0 will be designed as a non-proprietary protocol.
Vendors and libraries interested in participating on a committee to define the 3.0 release of SIP should contact Sue Boettcher at: .
