Executivesummary

Combination washer-dryersarepopularbecause:

  • theyareabletowashanddryclothesinasinglemachine
  • theyarecompactandcanbemoreeasilylocatedinspacessmallerthanthoserequiredbyseparatewasheranddryerunits.

Asthewashercomponentoftheseproductsisalreadyrequiredtobelabelledunderthe Water EfficiencyLabellingandStandards(WELS)Scheme,andtheseproductsusesignificantvolumesof water,evidenceexiststosupportlabellingofthe dryermodeoftheseproducts. Thereisalsothe possibilitythatstandalonedryerswhichutilisethe samedryingprincipleasthewasher-dryersofthis studywillbereleasedontothemarketandthelabellingproposedinthisreportwouldalsoapplyto suchproducts.

Labellingofthedryerwouldinformconsumers:

  1. thatthedryeruseswaterforthe dryingprocess
  2. thatthe ratedcapacity (kgofclothes)ofthedryerislessthantheratedcapacity ofthewasher
  3. thatthevolumeofwaterusedfordryingaloadofclothescanbegreaterthanthatusedforwashingalargerloadofclothes
  4. aboutthedryer’swaterefficiencyforcomparisonwithothersimilarproducts.

Labellingwouldalsoencouragemanufacturerstoimprovethewaterefficiencyoftheirproductsasmost ofthesemachinesconsumemorewater(perunitofcapacity)indryingmodethaninwashingmode.

Outofanumberofoptionsconsideredinthisstudyforpossibleratingalgorithms,the preferred algorithmistheonethat:

  • moreclearlydistinguishesbetweenthequantityofwaterconsumed(perunitofcapacity)bytheproductsandtheirrespectiveassignedwaterratings
  • hasareasonablesimilaritywiththecorrespondingenergyrating.

Theminimumwaterratingbandsfordryershavebeensettocommenceat1-startocorrespondwith theminimumratingforwashing machines. Itisnotedthatsomeoftheproductsinthisstudyconsumed excessivequantitiesofwaterintheirdryingmodeandassuch theirratingwouldbelessthan1-star.

Itisthereforesuggestedthatthemanufacturersand/ordistributorsmodifytheseproductsinorderto improvetheirwaterefficiency.Otherwise,considerationshouldbegiventoexcludingtheseproducts fromsupply(inamannerakintocurrentminimumstandardsfortoilets).

Introduction

Althoughcombination washer-dryersonlyformasmallproportionofthe washingmachineanddryer market,theseproductsarepopularbecausetheycombinethe operationsofwashinganddryingina singlemachine.Also,becausetheseproductsareasingleunittheycanbemoreeasilylocatedina smallerspacethanseparatewasheranddryerunits.Assuch,theseproductsarepopularinhighrise apartmentswhichgenerallyhavelimitedlaundryspace.Afurtheradvantage theseproductshaveover conventionaldryersisthatintheirdryermodetheyinternallycondenseallmoistureextractedfromthe washedclothes,anddonotblowitoutintothesurroundingspace.Assuch,theseproductscanbe locatedanywhereplumbingandpowerareavailable,withoutconcernthattheywouldaddhumidity tothesurroundingarea.

Theclothesdrying processofacombinationwasher-dryercanbebroadlyrepresentedbythe schematicdiagramofFigure1onthepreviouspage.

Inthedrying process,afanblowscoolairoveradryerheaterwhichheatstheair.Thehotairpasses viaaductthroughtothedrumcontaining thewashedandspun-dryclothes.

Thedryhotairthenpasses throughthemoistclothes,causingsomeofthemoisturetoevaporate.The moistvapourandtheairthathascooledasaresultofextractingthemoistvapourfromthewashing, thenpassesthroughtheperforations inthedrumandontoanexitductattherearofthedrum.

Themoistvapourandthecooledairtravelupacondenserductandthroughasprayofcoldwater whichcoolsandcondensesthemoistvapour.Anylintthatentersthecondenserductwiththevapour andcooledairisalsowashedawaybythe waterspray.

Thecondensedvapour,spraywater,andanylint,drainstoadrainpumpwhichemptiesthecontents towaste.

Thecooledairthatflowspastthewaterspraypassesthroughthefanagainandthewholeprocess iscontinuallyrepeated untilsensors1and2detectthatmoisturefromthewashed clotheshasbeen adequatelyremoved.

Inconventional dryers,airisheatedandcirculatedthroughwashedclothes.Theheatedairextracts moistvapourfromthewetclothes,andtogetherwithanylint,isthenblownoutofthedryerandinto thesurroundingspace.Thedryerofacombinationwasher-dryeroperatesasaclosed-loopenergy system,asalltheenergyfromtheheatedairisrecycledbackthroughthewashingratherthanblown outofthemachine.However, asthewaterfromthesprayandthecondensatearepumpedtowaste, thesemachinesaredesign-challengedtobewaterefficient.

Labelling

AsWELSalready requiresthatthewashingcomponentofthis productberegistered,andsince thedryingmodeofthis productuseswatertodrythe washing, itisrecommended thatthedryer componentshouldalsobeWELSlabelled.

Labellingthedryeroftheseproductswouldinformconsumersthattheseproductsuse waterduringthedryingprocess,andthattheyalsouse significantquantitiesofwater.Suchinformationshould encouragemanufacturerstoimprovethe waterefficienciesoftheirproducts.Asthe waterconsumption ofthesemachinesindryermode,perunitofdryercapacity,variesfrom4.56L/Kgto20.80 L/Kg, thereappearstobesufficientpotentialforimprovingwaterefficiency.

Theneedtoimprovethewaterefficiencyoftheseproductsisfurtherhighlighted bythefactthatfor mostofthesemachines,thewaterconsumed(perunitofcapacity)inthedryingmodeisgreaterthan thatinthe washingmode.Itshouldalsobenotedthatalthoughthephysicalsizeofthedruminthe machineisfixed,theratedcapacityofthemachineindryingmodeisonlyabouthalfthatoftherated capacityinwashermode.

Assuch,theuserofthemachinehastoeitherremoveabouthalfthefullwashloadandthendrythe removedwashingatalatertime,oronlyuse halfthewasherloadsothatthemachinecanwashand drytheclotheswithouttheneedfortheusertohandlewetwashing. Inthelatterscenario, thewasher wouldbeusedabouttwiceasoftenasthatforwhichthewasherwasWELSrated.Inthis case,itis likelytheuserwillusesignificantly morewaterovertheirweekly washing, unlessthemachines

load-senseorusersmanuallyreducewaterlevelstomatchtheirloads.

Table1setsoutcomparative dataforallthewasher-dryersregisteredunderenergyratingandWELS schemes.Notalldataforallproductsappearinthetable,assomeproductsregisteredforenergyare notavailableinAustralia,andarethereforenotregisteredforWELS.

Tables3to8indicate thestarratingsforOptions1to6respectivelythatwouldbeachievedbya dryerhavingaspecifiedratedcapacityandawaterconsumptionasdeterminedbytheprocedurein AS/NZS2442.1 Performanceofhouseholdappliances—RotaryClothesDryers.

Forthepurposesofmaintaininguniformitywithasimilartableforwashingmachinesin

AS/NZS6400Waterefficientproducts—Ratingandlabelling,Tables3to8indicatestarratings rangingfrom1to6starsinhalf-starsteps,andratedcapacitiesrangingfrom1.0to10.0kgload capacitiesin0.5kgsteps.

Proposedalgorithms

Thecriteriaforproposingasuitablewaterratingalgorithmfordryerswerethat:

  • therewouldbeasufficientrangeofwaterconsumptionvalueswithineach ratingband, butnot sobroadastoallowaproducttoincreaseitsstarratingwithminorimprovementstoitswater consumption
  • theratingsthatwouldbeassigned tocurrentproductswouldallowfutureimprovementin productwaterefficiencieswithouttheneedtore-scalethealgorithmwithinatleasta5-year period
  • theratingsthatwouldbeassigned tocurrentproductswouldalignwith,butpreferablynotexceed,thecorrespondingenergyrating
  • most(ifnotall)ofthecurrentproductsshouldfallwithina1-6waterstarratingband.

AswiththealgorithminAS/NZS6400Waterefficientproducts—Ratingandlabellingforwashing machines,the minimumwaterratingforcondenserdryerswassetat1-star.Inthisregard itwasnoted thatthreeproductsinthisstudyconsistentlyfellbelowthisminimumforeachofthe Optionsconsidered. Thewaterconsumptionoftheseisconsideredexcessiveandif theycannotbemodifiedtoattainthe

1-starminimumratingtheyshouldnotbeofferedforsale.

Referringtotheabovementionedcriteriaforsuitablealgorithms,Options1and5wereeliminatedas possibilitiesbecausesomeofthecurrentproductswouldalreadyberatedat5and6-stars.Assuch, thesealgorithmswouldnotencourageanyfuturewaterefficiencyimprovements.AlthoughOptions2,3,4and6aresimilar,Option2isrecommended becausetheratingsusingtheparametersinthis optionmostcloselymeetalltheabovementionedcriteria.
